Differences in prevalence arising from reference values for physiological and laboratory measurements used in studies of Tibetan highlanders and differences in study populations between the two studie…
We conducted an epidemiological study of Tibetan highlanders in Tsarang Village, Mustang District, Nepal, and reported the findings in Arima et al. (Journal of Physiological Anthropology, 43:25, 2024). Subsequently, Sienna R. Craig and colleagues, who have conducted long-term research in the same region, published a commentary on our study, providing an opportunity for further scholarly discussion. In their commentary, Craig et al. highlighted di…
Acute hypobaric hypoxia induces coordinated DNA methylation alterations and immune cell redistribution in lowlanders
Background: Acute hypobaric hypoxia rapidly affects oxygen transport, endocrine regulation, and immune function. However, how short-term hypoxic stress links immune cell redistribution with changes in blood DNA methylation remains unclear. Objectives: We aimed to characterize coordinated immune and DNA methylation responses to acute hypobaric hypoxia in lowlanders and to distinguish methylation changes caused by altered blood cell composition fro…
Epidemiological trends and spatiotemporal distribution of syphilis in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, 2014–2023
Introduction: Syphilis incidence has increased sharply in high-income countries since 2012, including Japan. Nagasaki Prefecture has not previously been subject to detailed epidemiological analysis of syphilis. This study aimed to characterize the epidemiological trends, demographic characteristics, and spatiotemporal distribution of syphilis in Nagasaki Prefecture from 2014 to 2023. Methods: A descriptive epidemiological study was conducted usin…
Seasonal variation in air pollutant levels and its effects on the sex ratio at birth on Fukue island, Japan
We evaluated the relationship between seasonal variations in air pollutant levels and the sex ratio at birth 9 months later on the Goto Islands. We found that an increase in oxidant levels just before and after conception may be a risk factor for a lower sex ratio at birth. Due to the previously reported vulnerability of male fetuses, females who become pregnant when air pollutant concentrations are high may be more likely to have a female baby. …
High prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis and its risk factors among Tibetan highlanders living in Tsarang, Mustang district of Nepal
Background In Tsarang (at 3560 m), which is located in Mustang, 62.7% of the residents answered that they had a subjective medical history of arthritis, and 41.1% of the residents answered that their families had a subjective medical history of arthritis on a survey conducted in 2017. The expression of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) and its effects are deeply involved in hypoxic adaptation in Tibetan highlanders. At the same time, HIF is also rel…
Implications of human activities for (re)emerging infectious diseases, including Covid-19
Since 1980, the world has been threatened by different waves of emerging disease epidemics. In the twenty-first century, these diseases have become an increasing global concern because of their health and economic impacts in both developed and resource-constrained countries. It is difficult to stop the occurrence of new pathogens in the future due to the interconnection among humans, animals, and the environment. However, it is possible to face a…
