The morphological architecture of Omani Mehri fəʕṓl/fəʕḗl plurals
This article revisits the system of gender exponence of a class of Omani Mehri plural nouns initially analyzed in Fathi (2017a,b), the fəʕṓwəl/fəʕṓyəl class. In that class, it is argued, gender is exponed canonically on one site and non-canonically on another site. Concomitantly, another class, not discussed in Fathi (2017a,b), is introduced here, the fəʕṓl/fəʕḗl plurals. That second class also displays canonical and non-canonical gender but cont…
Ablaut in Cairene Arabic
The vowel alternations relating the perfectives and imperfectives of Form I verbs in Cairene Arabic are examined in this article. It is argued that such alternations are driven by a coherent system of Ablaut (or apophony), the same system as was proposed by Guerssel and Lowenstamm for Classical Arabic. Mounting evidence from unrelated languages strongly suggests that Ablaut systems are organized in similarly rigid fashion cross-linguistically. Th…
To probe or not to probe in Omani Mehri: The difference between a noun and an adjective
The gender assignment mechanism of two-gender languages offers a recurrent analytical challenge, namely the presence of two distinct subsystems. The first such subsystem produces pairs of nouns (masculine and feminine) from the same root. The other subsystem produces singleton nouns (masculine or feminine) from one and the same root. What are these two subsystems and how do they relate to each other? It is proposed that mono-gendered nouns result…
