  • Virtual reconstruction beyond the past: Heritage future-making at the Capuchos convent in Alferrara, Portugal

Open Access•Jesse Rafeiro, Ana Tomé•ARTICLE•International Journal of Heritage…•2026

While virtual reconstruction commonly aims to visualise the past, this article argues that its knowledge production can also contribute to heritage future-making. We explore this in the ruins of the Capuchos Convent in Alferrara, Portugal, a largely forgotten site founded by Franciscan friars in the sixteenth century. After nearly two centuries of abandonment, and midway through a 25-year recovery plan, the site’s identity is being reconsidered t…

This article outlines a pedagogical approach to the virtual reconstruction of the 16th-century Monastery of Madre de Deus, Lisbon, Portugal. The monastery was built upon a former palace in 1509 by Queen D. Leonor. After her death, it underwent several modifications until its present function as the National Tile Museum.
