  • Nutritional value and environmental aspects of high-protein ultra-processed foods on the German market

Open Access•Jana Koop, Svenja Fedde et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2024

Objective: To compare nutritional value and aspects with environmental impact of high-protein (HP) and ‘normal-protein’ (NP) ultra-processed foods (UPF). Design: 299 HP and 286 NP products were evaluated regarding aspects of nutritional value, energy density, Nutri-Score, number of additives as well as hyper-palatability and price. Environmental impact of HP UPF was addressed by analysing protein sources and the use of environmentally persistent …

  • Interindividual variability in energy intake and expenditure during a weight loss intervention

    Open Access•Catarina L Nunes, Filipe Jesus et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•2024•References: 43

  • The Between-Subject Variance in Fasting Hunger in Healthy Men is Better Explained When Fat-free Mass is Assessed at the Tissue-Organ Level

    Open Access•Nuno Casanova, Anja Bosy‐westphal et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•2022

  • Changes in mean serum lipids among adults in Germany

Open Access•Julia Truthmann, Anja Schienkiewitz et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

Serum TC and TG considerably declined over one decade in Germany, which can be partly explained by increased use of lipid-lowering medication and improved lifestyle among men. The decline in serum lipids among women, however, remains unexplained

  • Association of a lifestyle index with MRI-determined liver fat content in a general population study

Manja Koch, Jan Borggrefe et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2015•References: 55

BACKGROUND: In prior studies, lifestyle indices were associated with numerous disease end points, but the association with fatty liver disease (FLD), a key correlate of cardiometabolic risk, is unknown. The aim was to investigate associations between a lifestyle index with liver fat content. METHODS: Liver fat was quantified by MRI as liver signal intensity (LSI) in 354 individuals selected from a population-based cohort from Germany. Exposure to…

  • Relationship between submaximal oxygen uptake, detailed body composition, and resting energy expenditure in overweight subjects

Open Access•Maryam Pourhassan, Benjamin Eggeling et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2014

FFM is a determinant of both VO2submax and REE. Modeling either REE or VO2submax from individual components of FFM, about 77.1% of variance in REE (by muscle, liver and kidneys mass) and 34.8% of variance in VO2submax (by skeletal muscle mass) could be explained. FM explained additional variance in REE, whereas SAT of extremities added to the variance in VO2submax only

  • Relationships between body roundness with body fat and visceral adipose tissue emerging from a new geometrical model

Open Access•Diana M Thomas, Carl Bredlau et al.•ARTICLE•Obesity•2013

OBJECTIVE: To develop a new geometrical index that combines height, waist circumference (WC), and hip circumference (HC) and relate this index to total and visceral body fat. DESIGN AND METHODS: Subject data were pooled from three databases that contained demographic, anthropometric, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measured fat mass, and magnetic resonance imaging measured visceral adipose tissue (VAT) volume. Two elliptical models of the …

  • Energy allocation between brain and body during ontogenetic development

Open Access•Britta Kubera, Anja Bosy‐westphal et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2013

Our results indicate that the share of energy allocated to the brain increased with weight loss, but decreased during the ontogenetic development from childhood to adolescence. These developmental changes in brain-to-body energy allocation appear to be driven by increasing plasma insulin concentrations

  • Human brain mass

Open Access•Steven B Heymsfield, Manfred J Müller et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2012

OBJECTIVES: A classic association is the link between brain mass and body mass across mammals that has now been shown to derive from fat-free mass (FFM) and not fat mass (FM). This study aimed to establish for the first time the associations between human brain mass and body composition and to compare these relations with those established for liver as a reference organ. METHODS: Subjects were 112 men and 148 women who had brain and liver mass me…

  • Evaluation of specific metabolic rates of major organs and tissues

Open Access•Zimian Wang, Zhiliang Ying et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2011

OBJECTIVES: The specific resting metabolic rates (K(i) , in kcal/kg per day) of major organs and tissues in the Reference Man were suggested in 1992 by Elia: 200 for liver, 240 for brain, 440 for heart and kidneys, 13 for skeletal muscle, 4.5 for adipose tissue and 12 for the residual mass. However, it is unknown whether gender influences the K(i) values. The aim of the present study was to compare the K(i) values observed in nonelderly nonobese …
