  • Pleistocene periglacial paleohydrology reconstituted from sandstone morphologies in the Paris Basin, France

    Open Access•Médard Thiry, A R Milne•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2025

A model for groundwater silicification within the Sables de Fontainebleau in sub-contemporary landscapes in the Paris Basin proposed 35 years ago has since been continuously and substantially updated, particularly with reference to new studies that relate silica precipitation to periglacial climate conditions. Herein we link the various distinctive morphologies of silicified sandstone bodies to the flow paths of groundwaters that imported the sil…

  • Hydrological staging of a second carved shelter in the Paris basin: Emergence of new Palaeolithic symbols

    Open Access•Médard Thiry, A R Milne et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2025•References: 9

  • Engineered ‘landmarks’ associated with Late Paleolithic engraved shelters

    Open Access•Médard Thiry, A R Milne•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•References: 27

  • Palaeolithic Map Engraved for Staging Water Flows in a Paris Basin Shelter

    Open Access•Médard Thiry, A R Milne et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2024•References: 9

The Ségognole 3 shelter lies within a quartzitic sandstone megaclast in a lag deposit in the Paris Basin. It displays a female sexual configuration associated with a horse engraving, stylistically attributed to the Upper Palaeolithic. Recent studies have demonstrated that modifications to the natural features of the shelter had been undertaken to cause water to flow through what is seen as the vulva. New investigations reported here describe addi…

  • Social context of Mesolithic rock engravings in the Fontainebleau sandstone region (Paris Basin, France): Contribution of the experimental study

Open Access•Alexandre Cantin, Boris Valentin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•References: 15

  • Sand calcites as a key to Pleistocene periglacial landscapes

Open Access•Médard Thiry, Christophe Innocent et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2021

We tested the potential for sand calcites to serve as a novel paleoclimate archive by investigating their age and formation conditions. Fontainebleau sand calcites are Pleistocene in age (based on 14 C and U-Th dating) and were primarily formed during glacial periods. δ 13 C values increase with the depth at which these sand calcites formed, consistent with open and closed CO 2 systems. Interpretation of the δ 18 O-T relationship in sand calcites…

  • Using digital techniques to document prehistoric rock art: First approaches on the engraved panels of the Paris Basin shelters

    Open Access•Émilie Lesvignes, Eric Robert et al.•ARTICLE•Digital Applications in…•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 8

  • Silcretes: Insights into the occurrences and formation of materials sourced for stone tool making

  • Mineralogical evidence for a local volcanic origin of the parent material of Bermuda Quaternary paleosols

Open Access•François Prognon, Isabelle Cojan et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

The alternation of carbonate deposits and paleosols compose the emerged part of the Bermuda archipelago. The pedological units present a complex and diversified mineralogy. Former studies demonstrated that the paleosols are not primarily a product of the unique dissolution of the surrounding carbonates, but contain a massive input of allochthonous non-carbonate detrital material. Researchers during more than the past three decades have attributed…
