Inside the Casts of the Pompeian Victims
The first casts of the forms of Pompeian victims of the AD 79 eruption of Mt Vesuvius were successfully achieved under the directorship of Giuseppe Fiorelli in 1863. To date, 104 individuals have been cast by restorers and archaeologists during the course of excavation. The methods used to obtain these casts were not well documented. It was always assumed that plaster or lime cement was merely poured into voids which preserved the impression of o…
The microclimate of Mawson's Hut based on snow and ice core analysis
We report the oxygen isotope ratio (δ 18 O) and structural analysis of four 2m long firn cores collected in 1997 from inside Mawson's Hut (consisting of a Main Hut and a Workshop), Commonwealth Bay, Antarctica, and 25 snow samples collected in 2001 in the vicinity of the huts. Our aim is to examine the microclimate within the huts. Structural analyses of the cores and snow samples indicate there were no significant melt and refreeze events, howev…
Resurrecting Pompeii
Resurrecting Pompeii offers a compelling exploration of how the ancient Roman city of Pompeii has been reconstructed, reinterpreted, and reimagined over time. Estelle Lazer examines the various ways in which Pompeii has been brought back to life, from early excavations and artistic representations to modern archaeological practices and virtual reality experiences. She analyzes the influence of changing historical contexts, scientific advancements…
The Insula of the Menander at Pompeii
This is the first of a three-volume analysis of the internationally renowned archaeological site called the Insula of the Menander, a major city block in ancient Pompeii. Volume one deals with the architecture within the block, especially with the House of Menander, the grand villa for which the site was named. Subsequent volumes will consider the decorations and household objects found during excavation.
Excavation and Restoration
Like most parts of pompeii, I 10 was explored and plundered by tunnellers before the modern excavations. It is important, in this respect, to distinguish the activities of the victims of the eruption from those of later intruders. A number of victims were trapped in the insula. Two skeletons were found in room 9 of the Casa del Fabbro, two more in room 8 of the Casa degli Amanti, and a total of eighteen In the Casa del Menandro — an adult and chi…
I 10, 5 and 6
This complex, straddling the north-west angle of the Casa del Menandro and the northeast angle of the Casa del Fabbro, consists of two separate elements. The first, occupying the ground floor, is a shop-cum-workshop (measuring approximately 3.50 m. × 4.60 m.) entered from entrance 6 (Pl. 73), with what is perhaps a living room (6A, measuring 2.30 m. × 4.50 m.) to the east of it. The second is a staircase (5), 1 m. wide, which ascends directly fro…
I 10, 2-3
No part of I 10, 2-3 is protected by a modern roof, and the house is now in such a ruinous condition as to render interpretation difficult. The form of the house, like that of 1 10, 1, is very irregular. It has a street frontage of much the same width as its neighbour, but loses space at the rear to the latter’s kitchen yard; at the same time, its backmost rooms (10-12) project into the property behind (I 10,18). The result is a plan which is rel…
I 10, 1
This small corner house had acquired an irregular plan in its final phase, thanks, on the one hand, to the offset caused by the fountain at the street corner (Pls. 1, 2), and, on the other, to the small kitchen yard projecting westwards into the neighbouring property 1 10, 2-3. Its entrance, protected by a pent roof, the beam-holes for which (19 cm. in diameter) are visible beneath its modern replacement (Pl 3), was set at the right extremity of …
