  • Heritability variations of body linearity and obesity indicators during growth

Open Access•Alaitz Poveda, Aline Jelenkovic et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2012

  • Multifactorial analysis of a mixed-longitudinal sample of Indian siblings: Age and sex effects on heritability

Open Access•Itziar Salces, Esther Rebato et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2009

  • Heritability of the somatotype components in Biscay families

Open Access•Esther Rebato, Aline Jelenkovic et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2007

  • Heritability variations of morphometric traits in West Bengal (India) children aged 4–19 years: A mixed-longitudinal growth study

Open Access•Itziar Salces, Esther Rebato et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2007

These results confirmed the existence of age-related trends in heritability of the considered morphometric traits. The sharp decline of the heritabilities at adolescence in most of the morphometric traits, and the acromio-iliac index in particular, may be due to the large inter-individual variation in the age at which the adolescent growth spurt is reached in both sexes

  • Sex differences in skinfold variability across human populations and during the life cycle

Open Access•Elisabetta Marini, Stefano Cabra et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2007

Skinfold dispersion dimorphism seems to exist throughout most of the life cycle, and be widespread in European and non-European human populations. It involves especially accumulation sites of the gynoid pattern known to be relevant in female reproduction. More 'standardized' fatty reserves in women might represent a selective advantage. On the other hand, skinfold dispersion dimorphism might also be related to cultural factors affecting the exten…

  • Age trends of sibling resemblance for height, weight and BMI during growth in a mixed longitudinal sample from Sarsuna-Barisha, India

Open Access•Esther Rebato, Itziar Salces et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2005

The study confirms the effect of age on the degree of similarity among siblings for height, weight and BMI in the sample. The sharp decline of correlation at adolescence can be interpreted in terms of the individual variation in age of reaching the adolescent growth spurt

  • Dispersion dimorphism in human populations

Open Access•Elisabetta Marini, Esther Rebato et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2005•References: 40

The aim of this paper is to verify the existence of dispersion (or variability) dimorphism in several anthropometric traits, i.e., some skeletal, muscular, and adipose dimensions, and to provide an evaluation of this scarcely considered aspect of sex differences. This research focuses on two human samples from two different European regions, Sardinia (Italy) and the Basque Country (Spain). Twenty-three anthropometric measurements were taken. A fi…

  • Evidence of Phenotypic and Social Assortative Mating for Anthropometric and Physiological Traits in Couples From the Basque Country (Spain)

Open Access•Itziar Salces, Esther Rebato et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2004

This study examined 28 anthropometrical and physiological traits in 107 married couples living in the province of Biscay (Basque Country, Spain). The aim was to verify the existence of a phenotypic and/or social preference when choosing a mate. For this, correlations between pairs of spouses were estimated by maximum likelihood, and a model of familial transmission (path analysis) was applied in order to test if social homogamy between mates exis…

  • Genetic and environmental sources on familial transmission in Biscayan families – III. The dynamometric strength

Open Access•Itziar Salces, Esther Rebato et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2004

  • Genetic and environmental sources on familial transmission in Basque families. II. Stature, weight and body mass index

Open Access•Itziar Salces, Esther Rebato et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2003

The results confirmed the hypothesis of maternal effects influencing the inheritance of stature

  • Family resemblance for anthropometric traits II. Assessment of maternal occupational and age effects

Open Access•Itziar Salces, Esther Rebato et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2002

  • Nutritional status by socioeconomic level in an urban sample from Bilbao (Basque Country)

Open Access•Esther Rebato, J Rosique et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2001

Anthropometry, records of food intake, and bioelectric impedance were gathered from a sample of 297 adults of both sexes who lived in marginal districts in the town of Bilbao and benefited from a program of social assistance. This survey aimed to determine present nutritional status and to ascertain the relationship between food intake and nutritional conditions. A comparative evaluation of anthropometry and food intake was then carried out using…

  • Familial resemblance for the age at menarche in Basque population

Open Access•Itziar Salces, Esther M Rebato Ch Itziar Salces•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2001

A cross-sectional sample from Biscay province (Basque Country, Spain) composed of 296 subjects from 143 nuclear families was analysed. The aim of this research was to study familial resemblance for the age at menarche and to investigate the influence that BMI, fatness and several socio-familial variables have on the menarcheal age. The influence of these variables on the degree of similarity of mother-daughter and sister-sister pairs for the age …

  • Recent data about age at menarche in the biscay province (Basque Country, Spain)

Open Access•Esther Rebato, Leire San Martin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1999

Data on menarcheal age were collected by thestatus quo method on a sample of 808 schoolgirls (8–19 years of age), from the Margen Izquierda area of the Biscay province (Basque Country). Probit analysis provided a mean age at menarche of 12.5±0.05 years with a standard deviation of 1.0 years. The result was compared with data from other previous Basque studies and related to age at PHV of the same sample

  • Fat distribution in relation to sex and socioeconomic status in children 4–19 years

Open Access•Esther Rebato, Itziar Salces et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1998

Fat distribution was studied in an urban sample of boys and girls 4.5 to 19.5 years from the Basque province of Biscay by means of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of five skinfolds. The PCA extracted four components, which explained 99.1% of the total variance. The first principal component revealed strong stability across age and sex, and was related to a pattern of central body fat distribution. The three other components, upper-lower trunk …

  • Age variations in sibling correlations for height, sitting height and weight

Open Access•Esther Rebato, Itziar Salces et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1997

Familial correlations for height, sitting height and weight have been studied in a sample of 1278 siblings for the Biscay province (Basque Country), aged 4+ to 24+ years. The data have been internally standardized according to sex and age of individuals. The degree of resemblance among sibling has been expressed by intraclass correlation coefficients. The total sample has been divided into three age categories: or = 15 years, in order to examine …
