Parental eating attitudes and indicators of healthy eating in a longitudinal randomized dietary intervention trial (the STRIP study)
Objective To examine the effects of child-oriented dietary intervention on parental eating attitudes and dietary behaviour. Design In the prospective, randomized Special Turku Coronary Risk Factor Intervention Project for Children (the STRIP study), a cohort of Finnish families took part in a nutritional intervention trial focused on the quality of their children's fat intake since the age of 8 months. Health-related and hedonic eating attitudes …
Sweets and sugar-sweetened soft drink intake in childhood in relation to adult BMI and overweight. The Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study
Objective To investigate the associations of BMI and overweight in adulthood with consumption of sweets and sugar-sweetened soft drinks in childhood and with the change in consumption between childhood and adulthood. Design Longitudinal 21-year follow-up study of Finnish children and adolescents from childhood to adulthood. Setting The Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study, comprising participants from both eastern and western Finland. Subject…
Consistent dietary patterns identified from childhood to adulthood
Dietary patterns are useful in nutritional epidemiology, providing a comprehensive alternative to the traditional approach based on single nutrients. The Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study is a prospective cohort study with a 21-year follow-up. At baseline, detailed quantitative information on subjects' food consumption was obtained using a 48 h dietary recall method ( n 1768, aged 3–18 years). The interviews were repeated after 6 and 21 ye…
Longitudinal changes in diet from childhood into adulthood with respect to risk of cardiovascular diseases
The association between nutritional conditions during World War II and childhood anthropometric variables in the Nordic countries
The Nordic children were affected by WWII in terms of a transient reduction in temporal trends in height and weight, and the magnitude of this decrease was associated with the severity of the energy restriction prevailing in the respective country during the war. These findings warrant further studies of the chronic diseases associated with height and weight for cohorts being in their growth periods during WWII
Characteristics of young men with clustering risk factors for coronary heart disease
The majority of coronary heart disease (CHD) arises from a population with only moderately elevated risk factor levels. This study addressed the issue of whether clustering of moderately adverse levels of serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was detectable in children and young adults. Significant clustering of these factors was observed in young …
Continuity and change in meal patterns
To identify elements of continuity and change from traditional meal patterns characterizing Finland before World War II, accounts of "typical workday" eating were elicited from 102 married women in Helsinki in 1984. Since the 1920s Finnish breakfast has changed from a prepared meal into a lighter eating event differing significantly from lunch and dinner. Earlier the three meals were simitar. The basic structure of lunch and dinner has not change…
