  • The evolution of writing systems: Introduction to the special issue

Open Access•Stefan Hartmann, Jessica Nowak et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft•2021

Recent years have seen an increased interest in the investigation of graphemic systems both from a linguistic point of view and in a decidedly interdisciplinary perspective. Many different aspects have been addressed in the recent literature: the semiotic nature of writing systems (e. g

  • Historische Sprachwissenschaft des Deutschen: Eine Einführung in die Prinzipien des Sprachwandels

Damaris Nübling, Antje Dammel et al.•BOOK•Historische Sprachwissenschaft…•2017

Dieses Standardwerk der deutschen Sprachgeschichte stellt die wichtigsten historischen Umbrüche der deutschen Sprache bis in die heutige Zeit dar und leistet deren Begründung, theoretische Fundierung und typologische Einordnung. So hat sich das Deutsche von einer Silben- zu einer ausgeprägten Wortsprache entwickelt, was sich z.B. in Phonologie, Orthographie und Morphologie niederschlägt. In der Syntax wird auf das Klammerprinzip abgehoben. Diesem…

  • Syllable and Word Languages

Javier Caro Reina, Renata Szczepaniak•BOOK•Syllable and Word Languages•2014

The typology of syllable and word languages is based on a multi-layered and hierarchically structured phonological model. The main claim is that the phonological make-up of a language depends on the relevance of the prosodic categories - with the syllable and the phonological word being typologically most important. The contributions discuss theoretical issues and provide synchronic and diachronic analyses of (Non-)Indo-European languages.

    Renata Szczepaniak•BOOK•Grammatikalisierung Im Deutschen•2011

  • The Role of Imagery in Dictionaries of Idioms

    Renata Szczepaniak, Robert Lew•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2011

This article adopts a cognitive linguistic approach to idioms as motivated lexical units. The focus is on lexicographic applications of the notion of motivation; specifically, on the usefulness of imagery in the form of pictorial illustrations and etymological notes in idioms dictionaries. We discuss the main features of idiom semantics, review the results of research into the influence of motivating information on idiom acquisition, and outline …

  • Merkmal(s?)analyse, Seminar(s?)arbeit und Essen(s?)ausgabe: Zweifelsfälle der Verfugung als Indikatoren für Sprachwandel

    Open Access•Damaris Nübling, Renata Szczepaniak•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft•2011

Contemporary German abounds in doubtful cases where linking elements alternate with zero elements, such as Seminar(+s?+)arbeit ‘term paper’, Respekt(+s?+)person ‘person who commands respect”. This variation indicates a profound language change in the course of which the linking +s+ has spread continuously since Early New High German and is replacing the zero element more and more often. Today, +s+ is the most productive, progressive and most freq…

  • Der phonologisch-typologische Wandel des Deutschen von einer Silben- zu einer Wortsprache

    Renata Szczepaniak, Renata Szczepaniak-Mendez•BOOK•Phonologisch-Typologische Wandel…•2007

The subject of this volume is the far-reaching phonological change which the German language has gone through during its history and which has led to a fundamental typological reorientation of the language. Whereas Old High German was clearly assigned to the typological pole of syllable languages, Modern German has developed into a pronounced word language that disregards the syllable. With the help of this typological model, all phonological cha…
