  • Mitakuye oyasin (all my relations)

Open Access•Amanda Gannon, Kathy Wahpepah et al.•ARTICLE•AlterNative An International…•2026•References: 37

Physical literacy embraces a wholistic approach to movement, integrating physical, social, emotional, and spiritual wellness. Supporting physical literacy development in early childhood, ages 3 to 5, is essential for fostering well-being. An Indigenous and non-Indigenous team of community leaders and scholars embarked on a journey with Knowledge Holders, Indigenous families, and early childhood educators to co-create, expand, and sustain a cultur…

  • “I am strong, I am fast, I am powerful”

Abimbola O Eke, Marta C Erlandson et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2025

Body image is a multidimensional construct that influences body-related self-attitudes and self-perceptions. Racialised (i.e. persons of colour) young women athletes have unique body-related experiences that may impact their body perceptions in sport. Body self-compassion, a kind and non-judgemental way of approaching one’s body experiences, appears relevant for racialised young women in sports. The purpose of this narrative study was to explore …

  • Site and sex specific bone mineral content, and density trajectories from adolescence through to 15 years post peak bone mass

Open Access•Yuwen Zheng, Adam Dominic George Baxter‐jone et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2025•Cited by: 1

Comparing the change to the precision of the instrument it was found that males and females showed real change in BMC at the TB, LS and TH but no real change at the FN from PBM to 15 years post PBM. In aBMD a real increase was found in TB and decrease in FN. Future studies should explore the roles of other factors, such as changes in lifestyle, related to bone mineral change after PBM attainment on bone trajectories

  • Etuaptmumk (Two-Eyed Seeing) in Nature’s Way-Our Way

Open Access•K Riley, Amanda Froehlich Chow et al.•ARTICLE•AlterNative An International…•2023

Growing philosophical and empirical evidence shows that physical literacy and risky play enriches movement opportunities, while also fostering increased physical activity, wholistic health, and wellness across the lifespan. However, physical literacy and risky play have typically been theorized and practiced from a western worldview. In response, Nature’s Way-Our Way is an initiative designed to ground physical literacy and risky play in Indigeno…

  • Parents, Teachers, and Community

Open Access•Matthew S Chapelski, Marta Erlandson et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

Increasing children's physical activity engagement has short- and long-term health benefits. Developing physical competence is a key component of children's engagement in physical activity. The purpose of our study was to assess if a 12-week home, school, and community-based physical literacy intervention improved the physical competence of children in kindergarten and grade one. Four schools were either assigned to receive the intervention (n = …

  • A Nature’s Way—Our Way Pilot Project Case Assemblage

Open Access•K Riley, Amanda Froehlich Chow et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

Physical literacy (PL) is gaining more attention from educational policy-makers, practitioners, and researchers as a way to improve health and wellness outcomes for children and youth. While the development of PL is important for early years children, there is limited attention in the literature that explores the political, cultural, and social discourses imbued in colonialism that implicate how PL is actualized in Indigenous early childhood educ…

  • Tibial cortical and trabecular variables together can pinpoint the timing of impact loading relative to menarche in premenopausal females

Open Access•Alison A Murray, Marta C Erlandson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2021

The consideration of diaphyseal cortical bone geometric and epiphyseal trabecular bone densitometric variables together within the tibia can identify variation in pre-menarcheal and post-menarcheal impact loading histories among premenopausal adult females

  • Health anxiety and associated constructs in children and adolescents with congenital heart disease

    Open Access•Amanda M Oliver, Amanda Oliver et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2020•References: 43

This study explored health anxiety and associated constructs in children and adolescents with congenital heart disease and typically developing children and adolescents. A total of 84 participants (7-16 years) completed measures of health anxiety, intolerance of uncertainty, anxiety sensitivity, and DSM-IV anxiety disorder symptom categories. Results demonstrated that children and adolescents with congenital heart disease experienced significantl…

  • Longitudinal patterns in BMI and percent total body fat from peak height velocity through emerging adulthood into young adulthood

Open Access•Erin Barbour‐tuck, Marta Erlandson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2018

OBJECTIVES: Emerging adulthood, a potential critical period, is an understudied period of fat mass accrual. The aim of this study was to describe patterns of fat mass accrual, and weight status, from adolescence, through emerging adulthood, into young adulthood. METHODS: One-hundred-eighteen participants (59 male) were measured repeatedly for 20 years. Annual measures of height, weight, and body composition (DXA) were taken. Calculated measures i…

  • At what age do normal weight Canadian children become overweight adults? Differences according to sex and metric

Open Access•Erin Barbour‐tuck, Marta Erlandson et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2018

In summary, overweight onset occurs during young adulthood with the exception of WC in males. BMI in males and %FM in females were the metrics identifying overweight the earliest
