  • India’s Approach to Tribal Self-Government Panchayati Raj (Local Governance) in Bhil Communities

Open Access•Rajendra Joshi, Rajendra Prasad Joshi•ARTICLE•Fourth World Journal•2025

This article is a condensed version of a case study of Gram Sahas in Scheduled Areas of Rajasthan, India conducted under a University Grants Commission of India sponsorship considering the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 (PESA). The study arose from the scholarly intent of the researcher to probe into the apparatus created in the wake of the 73rd constitutional amendment with regard to specific provisions for Scheduled Areas i…

  • MC1R diversity and its role in skin pigmentation variation in West Maharashtra, India

Open Access•Manjari Jonnalagadda, Neeraj Bharti et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2022

We do not find evidence of a selective constraint on MC1R. The presence of a large number of unique haplotypes and low F ST values at this locus suggests that MC1R polymorphisms may not be influencing pigmentation variation among castes and tribes in this region. Observed associations between rs3212359 and MI measures need to be validated through studies on larger samples and in-vitro functional studies

  • Policies to combat nitrogen pollution in South Asia

Open Access•Anastasia Yang, Nandula Raghuram et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Assessing and managing nitrogen sustainably is imperative for achieving the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targeted for 2030. South Asian countries, aware of the environmental and health impacts of nitrogen pollution, regionally as well as globally, piloted the 2019 UN resolution on sustainable nitrogen management, calling for urgent policy action. This paper assists South Asia policy development by providing new insights into nitroge…

  • Identifying signatures of positive selection in pigmentation genes in two South Asian populations

Open Access•Manjari Jonnalagadda, Neeraj Bharti et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2017

OBJECTIVES: Skin pigmentation is a polygenic trait showing wide phenotypic variations among global populations. While numerous pigmentation genes have been identified to be under positive selection among European and East populations, genes contributing to phenotypic variation in skin pigmentation within and among South Asian populations are still poorly understood. The present study uses data from the Phase 3 of the 1000 genomes project focusing…

  • Slum Planning Schemes

Open Access•Bimal N Patel, Bimal Patel et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Urbanization Asia•2011

Public agencies and NGOs in India have been pursuing slum-improvement projects since a long time, often with remarkable success. However, though political resolve, finances and basic institutional capacity are not a constraint today, scaling-up has become a formidable challenge. This article argues that officers in government agencies are unable to rapidly structure and implement slum-improvement projects because they lack an effective slum-impro…
