  • Burden of disease scenarios for 204 countries and territories, 2022–2050

Open Access•Stein Emil Vollset, Hazim S Ababneh et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2024

BACKGROUND: Future trends in disease burden and drivers of health are of great interest to policy makers and the public at large. This information can be used for policy and long-term health investment, planning, and prioritisation. We have expanded and improved upon previous forecasts produced as part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) and provide a reference forecast (the most likely future), and alternativ…

  • Global age-sex-specific mortality, life expectancy, and population estimates in 204 countries and territories and 811 subnational locations, 1950–2021, and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Austin E Schumacher, Hmwe Hmwe Kyu et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2024

BACKGROUND: Estimates of demographic metrics are crucial to assess levels and trends of population health outcomes. The profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on populations worldwide has underscored the need for timely estimates to understand this unprecedented event within the context of long-term population health trends. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021 provides new demographic estimates for 204 cou…

  • DNA Damage and Apoptosis as In-Vitro Effect Biomarkers of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) and the Food Additive E171 Toxicity in Colon Cancer Cells

Open Access•Margherita Ferrante, Alfina Grasso et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

This study investigated the DNA damage and apoptosis in colon cancer cells HCT-116 and Caco-2 induced by engineered titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 -NPs) (60 nm) and titanium dioxide food additive E171. MTT assays showed that both chemical forms significantly reduced cancer cell viability in a dose-dependent manner. In particular the food additive E171 induced a pronounced inhibitory effect on the growth of HCT-116 and Caco-2 cell lines (E1…

  • Chronic Pesticide Exposure in Farm Workers Is Associated with the Epigenetic Modulation of hsa-miR-199a-5p

Open Access•Giuseppe Gattuso, Luca Falzone et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The increasing use of pesticides in intensive agriculture has had a negative impact on human health. It was widely demonstrated how pesticides can induce different genetic and epigenetic alterations associated with the development of different diseases, including tumors and neurological disorders. Therefore, the identification of effective indicators for the prediction of harmful pesticide exposure is mandatory. In this context, the aim of the st…

  • Total Nut, Tree Nut, and Peanut Consumption and Metabolic Status in Southern Italian Adults

Open Access•Agnieszka Micek, Justyna Godos et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Higher nut consumption is associated with overall better metabolic status in individuals living in the Mediterranean area

  • Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet in Maltese Adults

    Open Access•Sarah Cuschieri, Massimo Libra•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Adherence to the Mediterranean diet in Malta is lower than in those of populations living in companion Mediterranean islands. Given the lack of data on this topic, further studies should be conducted among the Maltese people and public health nutrition interventions should be planned to improve current eating habits toward more traditional dietary patterns

  • D1S80 VNTR locus genotypes in a population of Southeastern Sicily

Open Access•Giuseppe Sciacca, Agata Grillo et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2004

Locus D1S80 is one of the best‐known polymorphic loci, showing a variable number of tandem repeats. This article presents the results on D1S80 allele distributions in a sample of 324 unrelated Sicilian individuals, collected and analyzed in two distinct laboratory centers. Although, as expected, the two most frequent alleles were those with 18 and 24 repeat units, the population sample from southeastern Sicily showed a relatively low frequency of…
