  • Detargeting the target in phoneme detection: Aiming the task at phonological representations rather than backgrounds

    Open Access•John H G Scott•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Language Sciences•2025

One challenge of learning a second or additional language (L2+) is learning to perceive and interpret its sounds. This includes acquiring the target language (TL) contrastive phonemic inventory, the sounds' systematic behavior in the TL phonology, and novel relationships between spelling and sound (GPCs; grapheme-phoneme correspondences). Many perception tasks require stipulation of written labels for target speech sounds (e.g., phoneme detection…

  • Direct mapping of acoustics to phonology: On the lexical encoding of front rounded vowels in L1 English– L2 French acquisition

    Open Access•Isabelle Darcy, Laurent Dekydtspotter et al.•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2012•Cited by: 23•References: 5

It is well known that adult US-English-speaking learners of French experience difficulties acquiring high /y/–/u/ and mid /œ/–/ɔ/ front vs. back rounded vowel contrasts in French. This study examines the acquisition of these French vowel contrasts at two levels: phonetic categorization and lexical representations. An ABX categorization task (for details, see Section IV) revealed that both advanced and intermediate learners categorized /œ/ vs. /ɔ/…
