  • Comparison of body fat estimates using 3D digital laser scans, direct manual anthropometry, and DXA in men

Open Access•Todd N Garlie, John P Obusek et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2010

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of utilizing three dimensional whole body laser surface scanning (3DS) to obtain specific anthropometric measurements to estimate percent body fat (BF). METHODS: Percent BF estimates from 37 male volunteers, of age 18-62 yr, were determined by inputting manual anthropometric (MA) and 3DS anthropometric measurements into the current Army BF prediction equation for males. The resul…

  • Applied Physical Anthropology in the U.S. Army

    Brian D Corner, Claire C Gordon•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•1996

In recent decades anthropometry has declined, except for applied anthropology. Instead of measuring the bodies of the last remnants of aboriginal populations, anthropometrists measure military personnel and civilians in order to design railroad and airplane seats and space suits. Doctors of Philosophy have become tailors to the new age of science. C. Coon, The Origin of Races (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1962)

  • Cranial growth and growth dimorphism in Ateles geoffroyi

    Open Access•Brian D Corner, Joan T Richtsmeier•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1993•Cited by: 9•References: 23

With the exception of the work of Schultz (1960), cranial growth in Ateles is not well documented. This paper describes the results of a detailed quantitative study of cranial ontogeny in male and female Ateles geoffroyi . Using Euclidean Distance Matrix Analysis (EDMA), local areas of form change due to growth within spider monkey crania are identified. We found substantial change local to the zygomatic region in the face, identified mediolatera…

  • Sexual dimorphism of ontogeny in the crab-eating macaque (Macaca fascicularis)

    Open Access•Joan T Richtsmeier, Jim M Cheverud et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•1993•Cited by: 15

  • Cranial growth in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus ): A quantitative analysis using three dimensional coordinate data

    Open Access•Brian D Corner, Joan T Richtsmeier•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1992•Cited by: 17•References: 26

Improvements in data gathering technology have made it possible to quickly and accurately digitize large numbers of objects. The three dimensional coordinates of 44 homologous landmarks were obtained from a sample of 104 squirrel monkey ( Saimiri sciureus ) crania. After sorting by sex, the crania were assigned to one of four dental age groups. Two quantitative methods, Euclidean distance matrix analysis (EDMA) and finite element scaling analysis…

  • Morphometric analysis of craniofacial growth in Cebus apella

    Open Access•Brian D Corner, Joan T Richtsmeier•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1991•Cited by: 20•References: 29

The present study was undertaken to provide a quantitative description of craniofacial growth in Cebus apella in three dimensions. Landmarks from a cross‐sectional sample of sexed and dentally aged crania were collected using a 3Space digitizer. Two methods of three‐dimensional form analysis, euclidian distance matrix analysis (EDMA) and finite‐element scaling analysis (FESA), were used to investigate growth changes in the cranium. Male and femal…
