Exploring Mutual and Exclusive Biological Information in Cranial Metric and Morphological Variables
Evidence suggests that both craniometric and cranial morphoscopic (MMS) traits elucidate information about cranial phenotypic variation and are appropriate proxies of genetic variation. Yet, the types of variation underlying the expression of craniometric and MMS traits are unknown. Recent data sets of matched skeletal metric and MMS data enable a holistic exploration into the cranial phenotype. Subsequently, the current study strived to provide …
A comparison of subadult skeletal and dental development based on living and deceased samples
OBJECTIVES: A fundamental assumption in biological anthropology is that living individuals will present with different growth than non-survivors of the same population. The aim is to address the question of whether growth and development data of non-survivors are reflective of the biological consequences of selective mortality and/or stress. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study compares dental development and skeletal growth collected from radiograph…
Using Classifications to Identify Pathological and Taphonomic Modifications on Ancient Bones
Pathological and taphonomic agents can sometimes produce bone modifications that seem indistinguishable from one another, even to an experienced eye. The aim of this study is to propose a classification system to identify modifications observed on skeletal elements from different environmental and chronological contexts, with similar morphologies but varied aetiologies. Two types of classifications, empirical and statistical, were constructed, te…
Evaluating the Consistency, Repeatability, and Reproducibility of Osteometric Data on Dry Bone Surfaces, Scanned Dry Bone Surfaces, and Scanned Bone Surfaces Obtained from Living Individuals
Applying dry bone osteometrics to virtual bone surfaces obtained via medical imaging raises the question of consistency between the variables. Variables obtained from virtual bone surfaces also need to be sufficiently repeatable and reproducible to be valid for anthropological studies. This is also true for the landmarks defining these variables and for their acquisition. The consistency between variables taken directly from dry bones and from th…
