Weaving the Real
This article challenges a tacit ontological picture that continues to shape much modern thought: a neo‐Democritean image of reality as fundamentally composed of discrete micro‐units, from Democritus's atoms to particles and strings. On this view, explanation proceeds by decomposition (wholes decomposed into parts), generating false dualisms—between reduction and emergence, matter and mind, science and the humanities—mistaken for features of reali…
Healthcare Professionals Promotion of Physical Activity with Older Adults
Healthcare professionals have a key role in promoting physical activity, particularly among populations at greatest risk of poor health due to physical inactivity. This research aimed to develop our understanding of healthcare professionals knowledge, decision making and routine practice of physical activity promotion with older adults. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with practicing healthcare professionals in general practice, physiother…
Healthcare Professionals’ Application and Integration of Physical Activity in Routine Practice with Older Adults
Healthcare professionals (HCPs) have a key role in promoting physical activity, particularly among populations at greatest risk of poor health due to physical inactivity. This research explored HCPs' knowledge, decision making, and routine practice of physical activity promotion with older adults. Furthermore, it aimed to enhance our understanding of the supports that HCPs need to effectively promote physical activity in routine practice across a…
Consequences of physical inactivity in older adults
Brief Standing Desk Intervention to Reduce Sedentary Behavior at a Physical Activity Conference in 2016
Objectives. To examine the impact of environmental restructuring on attendees at a physical activity conference when provided with standing tables and given point-of-decision prompts (PODPs; e.g., health messages). Methods. This randomized controlled trial took place at the Health-Enhancing Physical Activity Europe 2016 conference in Belfast, United Kingdom, September 2016. We randomly allocated 14 oral sessions to either the intervention group (…
The Role of Death in Life
Utility of three anthropometric indices in assessing the cardiometabolic risk profile in children
Findings suggest that WHtR provides similar cardiometabolic risk estimates to age and sex adjusted BMI
Thomas Nagel. Mind and Cosmos
Thomas Nagel. Mind and Cosmos: Why the Materialist and Neo-Darwinian Conception of Nature is Almost Certainly False
Physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, and clustered cardiometabolic risk in 10‐ to 12‐year‐old school children
OBJECTIVES: (1) Investigate whether clustered cardiometabolic risk score, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), sedentary time (ST), and body mass index Z-scores (BMI Z-scores), differed between participants that met and did not achieve ≥60 min of daily moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA). (2) Compare clustered cardiometabolic risk score, BMI Z-score, ST, and MVPA by CRF status. METHODS: One hundred and one (n = 45 boys) 10- to 12-…
The Difference Of Theology and Some Philosophies of Nothing
This article argues that theology thinks differently than philosophy because it is able to think an ontological difference and differences. Theology is able to do this, I argue, because of a trinitarian understanding of creation. A trinitarian understanding of creation does not rest upon any dualism which could domesticate difference. For example, according to Aquinas, creation is not a change. Consequently, there is no dualism of before and afte…
