Embodied Immunity: Place, Inequality, and Reproductive Outcomes in Two US Communities
Immune dysregulation has been linked to adverse reproductive outcomes, yet its biocultural determinants remain underexplored. This study examines how environmental inequality and embodied life history factors intersect to shape pregnancy loss among women in two socio-environmentally distinct, low-resource US communities. We hypothesized that indicators of immune activation and reproductive history would be associated with increased likelihood of …
Humanizing the Genome: Deep Mapping as a Pedagogical Tool in Migration Studies
Deep mapping may offer a promising pedagogical strategy for situating human biological data within the spatial, historical, and cultural contexts essential to biological anthropology. By embedding multimedia archival materials within interactive cartographic frameworks, deep maps have the potential to contextualize patterns of genetic variation through the lens of lived human experience. As demonstrated through a case study on 20th-century immigr…
Hyperandrogenism associated with polycystic ovary syndrome may have a protective effect against fracture risk in female athletes: A pilot study
The value of publicly engaged podcasting in human biology
Podcasting about science may be popular, but does it motivate engagement? The Human Biology Association and American Journal of Human Biology ( AJHB ) cosponsor a podcast that highlights recent articles. We hypothesized that AJHB articles discussed on the podcast ( n = 42) receive more online views than other articles from the same issues. We used Student's t ‐tests to compare mean article views and found podcasted articles received more views, b…
Childhood developmental environment affects adult intestinal inflammation levels: Preliminary evidence from older adults in the United States
Farm animal exposure was not significantly associated with FC. Females who grew up in suburban environments, especially between the ages of 5 and 10, had higher FC than females from urban or rural environments ( p p < 0.05). We found mixed, age- and sex-specific support for the idea that childhood exposures alter risk of inflammatory disease later in life
