Democratic limitations of urban climate governance: Proactive and reactive citizen action in four Scandinavian cities
Contentious Politics of Slums: Understanding Different Outcomes of Community Resistance against Evictions in Rio de Janeiro
Between 2010 and 2016, over 65,000 slum dwellers were forcibly evicted in Rio de Janeiro. This article compares three cases of anti-eviction resistance over this period. While the three case study communities were all relatively successful in contesting evictions, the outcomes (material, social, political-symbolic) of their mobilizations were different. To understand how and why, we examine and compare the structures and processes of mobilization…
Pac’Stão versus the City of Police: Contentious Activism Facing Megaprojects, Authoritarianism, and Violence
This article analyzes community activism and state interventionism within a context of racialized and gendered violence that is both direct/physical and structural. It presents a case study of Manguinhos, a cluster of favelas in Rio de Janeiro experiencing the federal Growth Acceleration Program (PAC), which provided political opportunities for community contentions. A main finding is that an oligarchic-patrimonial system suppressed the participa…
Collective heritage and urban politics: An uncertain future for the living culture of Rio de Janeiro
During the last decades, significant urban transformations in Rio de Janeiro led to rapid structural changes in the historic core of the city and the favelas. The following population removals, evictions and physical destruction of neighbourhoods resulted in diverse local and national forms of protest and resistance, which were widely reported in the media. But what of the cultural heritage attached to the displaced people and the disrupted place…
A question of social sustainability: Urban interventions in critical neighbourhoods in Portugal and Norway
Urban interventions in deprived neighbourhoods rank high on the agenda in European countries. This article explores what aspects of targeted urban-area interventions involve and appreciate local people during the intervention process so that they become motivated to continue to take care of and develop their area afterwards. Local social sustainability stands out as a necessary prerequisite for continued upkeep of upgraded urban neighbourhoods. T…
Churches and Peace-Building in Eastern DR Congo and Northern Uganda
By using church networks as a platform, different actors have tried to involve in peace-building processes in Northern Uganda and Eastern DR Congo. This church-led peace-building approach is legitimised in part with reference to the unique position the church holds locally in these societies, and in part because their leaders are held in high esteem nationally and transnationally. In this article, we examine and compare church-led peace involveme…
Poverty Reduction: What Role for the State in Today's Globalized Economy
Can a Patrimonial Democracy Survive? The Case of Mozambique
This article challenges the widespread view that since 1992 Mozambique has been a development success. The triple transition—to civil peace, multi-party democracy and a free market economy—is assessed from a historical-institutional perspective. Neopatrimonialism—the confusion between the public and private interests, resulting in the personalisation of power, privatisation of the state and 'businessification' of politics—is seen as the main logi…

Conclusion: Transcending the Discourse on the Politics of War
The two main ideas behind this volume have been a) to shed critical light on the reduction of African civil wars to ethnic conflicts, and b) to argue for the emergence of civil wars as the result of political struggles over power, resources and identities. The construction of Africa as the ‘other’ has entailed that factors commonly used to explain war elsewhere too often have been neglected in accounts of African civil wars. Writing on war in Afr…

Ethnicity Kills? Social Struggles for Power, Resources and Identities in the Neo-Patrimonial State
In almost all recent dramatic events in SubSaharan Africa issues of ethnicity and contested identities seem to be at the heart of the matter. But can the crisis in countries like Angola, Congo-Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Somalia really be reduced to ethnic cleavages
New Social Corporatism: A Discursive-Critical Review of the WDR 2000/1, ‘ Attacking Poverty ’
The World Development Report 2000/1 is a major event for those concerned with global poverty. The References in WDR 2000/1 to ‘empowerment’ and ‘voices of the poor’ provide the point of departure for a combined discourse analysis and comparative policy analysis. The article looks at the process around the WDR as part of a hegemonic project, and the contents of the WDR are seen as a discursive act related to four different social policy discourses…
New Institutionalism in Development Studies: Weberian Contributions
Einar Braathen, ‘New Institutionalism in Development Studies: Weberian Contributions’, Forum for Development Studies, 1996:2, pp. 215–241. The article describes the various approaches within New Institutionalism as important theoretical tools in the defence of an ecclectic centre between cultural interpretative analysis and economic rational models. Particular attention is given to Peter Evans as an eloquent example of how a neo-Weberian research…
