  • EU Migration Governance Beyond Its Borders: Informal Migration Diplomacy in Lebanon’s Syria Refugee Response, 2012–2024

    Open Access•A J Knudsen, Nadia Nameh•ARTICLE•Progress in Development Studies•2025•References: 20

This article examines Lebanon’s informal, often opaque, migration governance in response to the Syrian refugee crisis (2012–2024), shaped significantly by EU external migration policies. Lebanon’s approach relies on elite bargains and back-door agreements, sidestepping formal policy processes within its sectarian, consociational political system. The EU’s influence, grounded in extensive financial aid, aims to contain refugee movements within Leb…

  • Crushing Hamas: Origins and Expansion of the Islamic Resistance Movement in Lebanon

    Open Access•A J Knudsen•ARTICLE•Anthropology of the Middle East•2024•References: 12

This article examines Hamas's growth in Lebanon after the 1992 deportation of 415 members to the no-man's land between Lebanon and Israel, leading to ties with the Lebanese branch of the Islamic Brotherhood. Over time, Hamas developed a complex organization rivaling the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), with offices and representatives in Lebanon's refugee camps. The article argues that Hamas, rooted in the camps and driven by pragmatism, …

  • Sheikhs and the City: Urban Paths of Contention in Sidon, Lebanon

    Open Access•A J Knudsen•ARTICLE•Conflict and Society•2020

This article examines the rise and fall of the “Assir movement,” a neo-Salafist campaign led by a charismatic local sheikh who, after years of community activism, rose to prominence in the wake of the Syrian uprising (2011–present) protesting the Sunnis’ political decline and disempowerment. To understand the Assir movement’s popular appeal, it is necessary to examine the pathways of contention in specific urban contexts and the extension of Sala…

  • Competitive clientelism in secondary cities: Urban ecologies of resistance in Lebanon

    Open Access•A J Knudsen•ARTICLE•Third World Thematics A TWQ Journal•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 25

This article analyses political and religious mobilisation in Sidon and Tripoli, both secondary cities struggling amidst deep social divisions, elite competition, and armed conflict during the contentious decade following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri (2005–15). A central element in the sectarian and Islamic resurgence was discontent with the political and social decline of the Sunnis. The Syrian revolt magnified Sunni-S…

  • Emergency Urbanism in Sabra, Beirut

    A J Knudsen•ARTICLE•Public Anthropologist•2019

Since the mid-1980s, generations of displaced people have sought refuge in the ramshackle buildings that were once the Gaza-Ramallah Hospital, a multi-story hospital complex built by the Palestinian Liberation Organization ( plo ). Damaged during the civil war, today the buildings blend in with the run-down Sabra-Shatila neighbourhood in Beirut’s “misery belt.” This paper charts the buildings’ history and main characters: the lodgers, landlords, …

  • Decade of Despair: The Contested Rebuilding of the Nahr al-Bared Refugee Camp, Lebanon, 2007–2017

    Open Access•A J Knudsen•ARTICLE•Refuge Canada s Journal on Refuge•2018

In mid-2007 the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp near Tripoli was destroyed by the Lebanese Army battling an insurgent Islamist group, Fatah al-Islam. Displacing about 30,000 Palestinian refugees, it was one of the largest internal battles in post–civil war Lebanon. A decade later, the camp has yet to be fully rebuilt; indeed, reconstruction has been slow, confictual, and underfunded. Rebuilding the camp has been contested and delayed by political oppo…

  • The Great Escape? Converging Refugee Crises in Tyre, Lebanon

    A J Knudsen•ARTICLE•Refugee Survey Quarterly•2017•Cited by: 1

This article analyses the convergence of two refugee crises, Palestine (1948–present) and Syria (2012–present), having brought old and new refugees into close, and sometimes, conflictual contact. While the former settled and gradually integrated with a view to return to Palestine, the new wave of self-settled refugees from Syria seek to migrate and resettle in Europe, having the means and opportunity to do so. Both staying and leaving involve pro…

  • Campements, abris et squats: Des zones floues où vivent les réfugiés syriens au Liban

    A J Knudsen•ARTICLE•Hommes & migrations•2017•Cited by: 2

  • Death of a Statesman - Birth of a Martyr: Martyrdom and Memorials in Post-Civil War Lebanon

    Open Access•A J Knudsen•ARTICLE•Anthropology of the Middle East•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 12

This article furthers the study of post-civil war memorialisation in Lebanon by analysing the trajectory of the late Prime Minister Rafik Hariri from statesman to martyr. This transformative process offers a window into the symbolism of Lebanese statehood, and demonstrates how the politicisation of confessional martyrs is used to decry injustice and stake out claims to the state. There is no tradition for prosecuting and punishing political murde…

    A J Knudsen, Are Knudsen•ARTICLE•Forum for Development Studies•2011•References: 12

This article analyses the institution of ‘scientific forestry’ in the northern borderlands (‘Frontier’) of British India c. 1850–1940. Using archival material from the India Office Records (IOR), it traces the extension of colonial forest policies from the plains to the inaccessible parts of the Indus River and its tributaries. The article demonstrates that ‘scientific forestry’ was an early conservation narrative claiming to preserve forest – bu…

    A J Knudsen, Are Knudsen•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2005•Cited by: 7•References: 19

There has been less concern with Islamism among the Palestinian refugees dispersed in Middle Eastern countries such as Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. The article outlines the sourc…
