Spatial distribution of human capital in Romania
Human capital reflects the knowledge, competencies, and health people invest in and accumulate throughout their lives. Therefore, investing in people's health, education, and skills is essential to developing human capital. The evaluation of human capital is very important for understanding the premises for future development at a territorial level and the impact that different development trajectories may have on economic performance and populat…
Transnational contextualisation
This article discusses experiences harvested when communicating migration research from an academic position as media researcher, partly influenced by other positions. It discusses transnational literacy illustrated by the case of Afghanistan and Afghan refugee experiences, arguing for a more holistic contextual approach to the phenomenon of flight and all its processes. A critical human rights perspective in media research proves useful guidance…
Mobile Flight
This article presents results from in-depth interviews with 18 newly arrived refugees in 2016, focusing on their usage of cell phones underway to Europe. The (anonymous) informants are from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. Relating to previous findings and theories of globalisation and media ecology, the research concludes that the phone is used for a wide range of purposes, such as connectivity (with family, friends and potential helpers), en route …

Being Me, Being Us, Being Them
This chapter explores some aspects of the media experiences collected by people with an ethnic minority background, concentrating on how mediated definitions work or how identities are represented by the journalists and on what subjects one is allowed to speak. It explains a larger project where the main endeavour has been in-depth interviews with minority actors. A guide for semi-structured interviews had been developed and tested, and this guid…
After the 22 July Terror in Norway
This article analyses the mainstream press coverage of the terror in Norway post 22.07.2011 and discusses how and in what context the concepts of freedom of expression and multiculturalism occur. The aim has been to map important discursive trends in the aftermath of the terror. A clear division between different victim positions is identified. One blames majority society for not granting enough space to extreme right wing views on Islam and dive…
The Terror in Norway and the Multiculturalist Scapegoat
Against the background of the trial of Anders Behring Breivik for the terrorist mass murder of seventy-seven people in Norway in July 2011, this article examines the perpetrator's rhetoric in relation to ‘multiculturalism’. The material is gathered from a right-wing, Islam-critical website document.no, to which he was a frequent contributor. In addition, the article addresses material from the post-22 July media debate about multiculturalism in t…
The Tainted Hero
This article presents an analysis of two major Norwegian newspapers’ coverage of a major transnational media event—the Bali Climate Summit in December 2007. Climate Summits are seen as ample opportunities to study journalism at the global level and simultaneously the relation between global and local perspectives. It demonstrates how main national actors within the political field exercise their hegemony toward the press and that the Norwegian le…
Being the Other'-or Tourist in her Reality? Reporters' and Writers' Attempts at Cross-Identification
This article analyses the particular positions and experiences of role reporters, that is, journalists or writers who have taken on another identity to better reveal the life conditions of people in the margins of society. Their writings are analysed from the perspective of ‘unlearning privileges as one's loss’ and also within the ethical perspective of an individual's responsibility for the Other. The question is also raised of whether role repo…

Salesman in Beijing
In 1983 Arthur Miller was invited to direct Death of a Salesman at the Beijing People's Theatre, with Chinese actors. While there, he kept a diary: this book tells the story of Miller's time in China, and of the paradoxes of directing in a Communist country a tragedy of American capitalism
Methods in Sinology
Even as recently as a dozen years ago, one learned basic Sinological methods rather much the way one learned about sex: by osmosis and "from the gutter." One puzzled over the remarks of his professors, looked up the strange words in the dictionary, and listened to the older boys in the hall. "I got it from theKanshi taikan," some graduate student would say, and you made a mental note to ask a friend about theKanshi taikanthe next time you could b…
