  • Putnam and the Pragmatists

    Open Access•Robert J Schwartz•ARTICLE•European Journal of Pragmatism…•2021•References: 1

Hilary Putnam has been both a forceful champion and penetrating critic of pragmatism. The goal of this paper is to compare and contrast main themes and theses of his philosophy with those associated with pragmatic thought. The task is complicated by the fact that what counts as a pragmatic position is itself not well-defined. To narrow matters down I focus on the writings of the Classic American Pragmatists: Peirce, James, and Dewey, whose work P…

  • Concurrent Partnerships, Nonmonogamous Partners, and Substance Use Among Women in the United States

Adaora A Adimora, Victor J Schoenbach et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2011•Cited by: 8•References: 28

Objectives. We determined the prevalence, distribution, and correlates of US women's involvement in concurrent sexual partnerships, a sexual-network pattern that speeds population-wide HIV dissemination. Methods. We used sexual partnership dates reported by 7643 women in the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth to determine prevalence of concurrent sexual partnerships during the preceding 12 months. We examined associations between concurrency a…

  • Is Mathematical Competence Innate

    Open Access•Robert Schwartz, Robert J Schwartz•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1995•References: 16

Despite a vast philosophical literature on the epistemology of mathematics and much speculation about how, in principle, knowledge of this domain is possible, little attention has been paid to the psychological findings and theories concerning the acquisition, comprehension and use of mathematical knowledge. This contrasts sharply with recent philosophical work on language where comparable issues and problems arise. One topic that is the center o…

  • Medicare Reimbursement for Preventive Care

    Joseph P Morrissey, J Morrissey et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1995

A randomized, controlled trial was conducted to assess the effects of a financial and office systems intervention to increase preventive care in physicians' offices for patients aged 65 years or older. A total of 1,914 patients from 10 primary-care medical practices in central North Carolina were randomized within practices to an intervention and a usual-care control group. The intervention consisted of full Medicare reimbursement to physicians f…

  • Selective neutrality of surname, distribution in an immigrant indian community of Houston, Texas

Open Access•Ranajit Chakraborty, Robert J Schwartz•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1990

From survey data on surnames in an immigrant community of Indians in Houston, Texas, it is shown that the family size distribution and the distribution of the number of male children per family are independent of the surnames of the parents. This provides a direct test of selective neutrality of surname distributions. A genetic theory of sampling distribution of neutral alleles is employed to estimate the parameter of the surname distribution, an…

  • Looking into the black box

    Robert J Schwartz, K M Wei et al.•ARTICLE•Annales de Démographie Historique•1984

A long-term epidemiological study of the families of Laredo, Texas, a Mexican-American city on the U.S. border with Mexico is being conducted. Individual records of vital events have been linked into a computer-based genealogical network, relying on interactive methods of data entry, correction and review. Accurate entry, error correction, and the avoidance of false links have been priorities. The record linkage strategy has been to accept pairwi…

  • Acupuncture and Expertise

Robert Schwartz, Robert J Schwartz•ARTICLE•The Hastings Center Report•1981

Oj ne of the unexpected consequences of reopening commerce with China in the 1970s has been the development of a demand for acupuncture in the United States. From the time of Richard Nixon's first visit, travelers have returned from China with pictures showing the use of acupuncture as an anesthetic in very serious operations, and with stories of the phenomenal success of acupuncture in treating pain generally not amenable to Western medical proc…

  • Approximate Truth and Confirmation

    Open Access•Robert J Schwartz•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1981

In this paper I show that Goodman's theory of projectibility, although partly successful, is inadequate since it fails to take into consideration the “approximate” nature of certain scientific hypotheses

  • Idealizations and Approximations in Physics

    Open Access•Robert J Schwartz•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1978•Cited by: 1•References: 3

While the use of so-called idealizations in science has been widely recognized for many years, the philosophical problems that arise from this use have received relatively little attention. Even a cursory reading of the philosophical literature devoted to these problems ([1]; [2]; [4], pp. 160–171; [5]; [7], pp. 54–63) reveals that the following questions remain unanswered: In general, what, if any, are the distinguishing characteristics of ideal…
