A history of inheritance in the thinking of Karrabing Film Collective, from Belyuen, the small Indigenous community in Australia. Speaking across from Oceania to Alps, to Central Europe via Australia, and finally on zoom between New York and Vienna, Elizabeth Povinelli and Khadija von Zinnenburg Carroll discuss relations to Country through the voices of ancestors. This is a polyphony in an everywhen in which everyone is present. Possessive indivi…

  • Affects After Finitude

    Elizabeth Povinelli, Elizabeth A Povinelli•ARTICLE•Anthropological Quarterly•2023

This essay approaches current anxieties about climate catastrophe by differentiating between a philosophy of the end and a social theory of settler late liberalism that is situated after the end. In order to suggest such a social theory, I begin with two examples of moods and dispositions cultivated in my birth family and among my Karrabing colleagues. Instead of what moods should be fostered at the end-optimism, hope, panic, anxiety, despair-I a…

  • Mattering-Forth: Thinking-With Karrabing

    Elizabeth Povinelli, Elizabeth A Povinelli et al.•ARTICLE•Theory & Event•2021

Mattering-Forth:Thinking-With Karrabing Elizabeth Povinelli (bio), Daniela Gandorfer (bio), and Zulaikha Ayub (bio) Inventing and grasping concepts are material-discursive practices. Approaching these practices matterphorically means taking account for the fact that representation and the physical world are not two separate preexisting realms but are, rather, entangled. Bifurcational cuts creating dichotomous structures do exist, but are insuffic…

  • Ancient Sunlight: An Interview with Elizabeth A. Povinelli

Xenia Benivolski, Elizabeth Povinelli et al.•ARTICLE•Public•2018

Elizabeth A. Povinelli is an anthropologist, queer theorist, and filmmaker, whose ground-clearing work has developed a critical theory of late liberalism that would support what she calls ‘an anthropology of the otherwise.’ In her most recent monograph, Geontologies: A Requiem to Late Liberalism, she probes the politics that undergird the distinction between Life and Nonlife, tracking its pernicious vocation both within contemporary regimes of po…

The desert heat was oppressive. The flies were a constant presence on mouth, nostrils, and eyes. It is 1896. Baldwin Spencer and Frank Gillen are camped just west of Alice Springs, Australia. Gillen has arranged for Arrente men and women and their surrounding Aboriginal neighbors to gather nearby to perform a repertoire of their rituals in exchange for food, tobacco, tea and protection from pastoralists and police. Baldwin Spencer is a zoologist,…

Elizabeth A Povinelli, Benjamin Lee et al.•BOOK•Empire of Love•2006•Cited by: 274

In The Empire of Love anthropologist Elizabeth A. Povinelli reflects on a set of ethical and normative claims about the governance of love, sociality, and the body that circulates in liberal settler colonies such as the United States and Australia. She boldly theorizes intimate relations as pivotal sites where liberal logics and aspirations absorbed through settler imperialism are manifest, where discourses of self-sovereignty, social constraint,…
