Neighborhood Socioeconomic Status, Depression, and Health Status in the Look Ahead (Action for Health in Diabetes) Study
In this selected group of weight loss trial participants, lower neighborhood SES was significantly associated with poorer health status. Whether these associations might influence response to the Look AHEAD weight loss intervention requires further investigation
Neighborhood and weight-related health behaviors in the Look Ahead (Action for Health in Diabetes) Study
In this selected group of weight loss trial participants, restaurant availability was associated with some weight control practices, but neighborhood SES was not. Future studies should give attention to other populations and to evaluating various aspects of the physical and social environment with weight control practices
Alterations of energy expenditure following central administration of insulin detemir in rats
Human food intake is discriminatively sensitive to gastric signaling
Using a computer-based operant task and progressive ratio to estimate eating independent of hunger in obese women with binge eating disorder
Interaction of food deprivation state with food intake recall in humans
Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease: Pathophysiology, Evaluation, and Effect of Weight Loss
Obesity is becoming a global epidemic in both children and adults. It is associated with numerous comorbidities such as cardiovascular diseases (CVD), type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain cancers, and sleep apnea/sleep-disordered breathing. In fact, obesity is an independent risk factor for CVD, and CVD risks have also been documented in obese children. Obesity is associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality as well as reduced l…

Effects of ethnicity, gender, obesity, and age on central fat distribution
Population based studies relying primarily upon anthropometric surrogates of fat distribution have shown that central or upper-body adiposity is related to ethnicity, gender, age, and total body fatness. As an improvement over anthropometry, dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) provides more precise measurements of fat mass (FM) in the total body and trunk. DXA was performed on 510 apparently healthy White (81 females (f), 64 males (m)), Black (94 f, …

Medical Hazards of Obesity
The medical hazards of obesity are discussed. Risks include insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, hypertriglyceridemia, decreased levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and increased levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Obesity is also associated with gallbladder disease and some forms of cancer as well as sleep apnea, chronic hypoxia and hypercapnia, and degenerative joint disease. Obesity is an independent risk factor for de…
