  • Quantitative dermatoglyphics and population structure in Northwest India

Open Access•B Mohan Reddy, Virendra P Chopra et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2000

The nature and extent of dermatoglyphic variation in northwest India is examined with the help of 28 quantitative variables-20 finger ridge counts and 8 palmar pattern ridge counts-among 12 endogamous populations. These populations represent the entire spectrum of ethnic and socioeconomic variation of the region and are presently distributed in three different states-Rajasthan, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh. Of a total sample of 1,160 adult males,…

  • Genetic affinities between the migrant and parental populations of fishermen, East coast, India

Open Access•B Mohan Reddy, Virendra P Chopra et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1995

Genetic affinities between the migrant groups of fishermen from Puri and their parental counterparts in the Southern areas were examined using 11 genetic loci: four blood groups, five red cell enzymes, and two serum proteins. The samples for the parental populations (about 430 subjects) were drawn from 34 villages spread along the 400 km coast in Ganjam district of Orissa and the contiguous Srikakulam, Vishakhapatnam, and East Godavari districts …

  • Occupational Health Hazards in Stone Quarry Workers

Open Access•Anju Swami, Virendra P Chopra et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•1994

The relationships of cardiorespiratory functions, physical fitness and body measurements with duration of stone dust exposure has been investigated in malis working in stone quarries of Alwar district of Rajasthan. The exposed group comprised 125 adult males and 125 adult females working actively in different stone quarries in Alwar district. For the control group samples were drawn from pastoral Malis totalling 250 individuals (125 adult males a…

  • Study on quantitative dermatoglyphic characters with fra-X-syndrome

    A Rodewald, P Chopra et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•1991•Cited by: 1

Quantitative dermatoglyphic characters of fingers and palms of 61 male patients with fra-X-syndrome and 20 female heterozygote carriers were analysed and compared with the data from 84 male and 90 female normal individuals. Univariate and multivariate analysis of the data led to the following conclusions: 1. The fra-X-syndrome patients show higher ridge count and higher MLI value (increased transversality of the main lines), and lower a-b ridge c…

  • Opportunity for natural selection among the Indian populations

    Open Access•B Mohan Reddy, Virendra P Chopra•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1990•Cited by: 1•References: 21

A critical review of data on opportunity for natural selection among the Indian populations has been made. These data on 96 populations were analysed according to regional, habitat, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The trends observed on the basis of these Indian data have been compared with worldwide data and data from industrialized nations. As in the industrialized nations, a gradual decrease in I m and I t is observed with improving socioeconom…

  • Genetic differentiation among four groups of fishermen of the Eastern coast, India

    Open Access•B M Reddy, B Reddy et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1989

The four endogamous groups of fishermen living around the city of Puri, located on the eastern coast of India, were studied for blood groups, red cell enzymes and serum proteins (11 loci). Only 1.3% of the total diversity among the groups studied is due to differences between them (GST = 0.013). The genetic distances between populations were estimated using Edwards and Cavalli-Sforza's method. The pattern of genetic distance reflects the geograph…

  • Quantitative palmar dermatoglyphics and the assessment of population affinities

    B M Reddy, P Chopra et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•1988•Cited by: 3

Variation in quantitative dermatoglyphics among three endogamous groups of marine fishermen of Puri Coast, India, is greater for the palmar variables than for the fingers. This is the case in both the sexes. The pattern of population affinities, however, differs for the males and females. In order to evaluate the importance of palmar variables in population studies, the results in males are compared with those of finger variables and anthropometr…

  • Opportunity for natural selection with special reference to population structural measures among the Vadde

Open Access•B Mohan Reddy, Virendra P Chopra et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1987

Crow's indices of opportunity for natural selection have been studied among the Vadde, a fishing community of Kolleru Lake, Andhra Pradesh, India. The sample comes from 15 of the 60 fishing villages. The indices were computed both at the level of village and population units. A village sample of Palle, another fishing group in the area, has also been analysed for the purpose of comparison. An attempt has been made to explain variation in selectio…

  • Biological affinities between the migrant groups of fishermen of Puri Coast, Orissa, India

Open Access•B Mohan Reddy, Virendra P Chopra et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1987•Cited by: 4•References: 10

Biological affinities between the three endogamous groups of marine fishermen of Puri are examined with the help of nine anthropometric measurements and 22 dermatoglyphic traits of fingers and palms. The results are interpreted in the light of their ethnic, geographical, and migrational backgrounds. Multiple discriminant analysis and Mahalanobis's generalized distances suggest higher discrimination of populations with reference to anthropometric …

  • A comparison of dermatoglyphic methodologies in population studies

    Open Access•R L Jantz, Virendra P Chopra•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1983•Cited by: 9•References: 16

Use of dermatoglyphics in population studies has been marked by a great deal of methodological variation among investigators. We compare various dermatoglyphic approaches using data derived from four groups in the Kumaon region of India. Dermatoglyphic data included ridge‐counts and other quantitative variables, and the classification systems of Cummins and Midlo and Penrose and Loesch. Results were evaluated against anthropometric and serologica…

  • Genetic basis of hair histomorphological variables

    Open Access•A B Das‐Chaudhuri, A B Das-Chaudhuri et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1983•References: 19

The genetic basis of scalp hair histomorphological variables, such as incidence of medulla, diameter, area of cross‐section, cross‐sectional index, and weight has been examined in a Bengalee hair sample (India) by family study. The results of correlation analysis between different combinations of parents and offspring together with sibs indicate the involvement of a significant genetic component in variability. The estimates of heritability based…
