  • The Nominal Morphology of Gizey

    Open Access•Guillaume Guitang•ARTICLE•Studia Linguistica•2026

Gizey has very little overt nominal morphology. Gender is not marked morphologically, but only via agreement. The gender system has semantic underpinnings. In many cases, the biological sex of animate referents and the size of inanimate referents govern gender assignment. Number is the only overtly marked inherent feature, with the plural being marked by a non‐zero affix or being realized through suppletion. Furthermore, Gizey has a considerable …

  • Ideophones in Gizey grammar

    Open Access•Guillaume Guitang•ARTICLE•Journal of African Languages and…•2025•References: 26

This paper discusses ideophonicity in Gizey (Chadic), viz ., the ability of a word to depict sensory experiences. The term “ideophone” is frequently attested in the Gizey literature. While ideophones are classified as a separate word class (part-of-speech), the questions of what they are (phono-semantic characterisation) and how they function (morphosyntactic characterisation) are absent from that literature. Both concerns are addressed in this p…

    Open Access•Guillaume Guitang•ARTICLE•Linguistique et langues africaines•2024

This monograph provides a grammar sketch of Kwang (ISO 639-3: kvi; glottocode: kwan1285) together with texts and vocabulary. Kwang is an under-described and under-documented East Chadic language spoken by 16 to 18,000 people that have settled mostly in an area between the Logone and the Chari rivers in Chad. The Kwang-speaking area is bordered by the Massa people in the West, the Ndam in the East, the Bagirmi (whose Nilo-Saharan language is the s…
