  • Childhood developmental environment affects adult intestinal inflammation levels

Open Access•Courtney Manthey, Meg K Super et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2024

Farm animal exposure was not significantly associated with FC. Females who grew up in suburban environments, especially between the ages of 5 and 10, had higher FC than females from urban or rural environments ( p p < 0.05). We found mixed, age- and sex-specific support for the idea that childhood exposures alter risk of inflammatory disease later in life

  • Dual burden of infectious and chronic disease in low-resource U.S. communities

    Open Access•Theresa E Gildner, Samuel S Urlacher et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2024

For this disadvantaged U.S. sample, the association between adiposity and inflammation varies by the systemic/localised nature of inflammation and the likely underlying cause of inflammation. Defining these associations will improve understanding of how rising obesity rates shape long-term health inequities, with implications for more effective intervention design

  • Development and validation of an Elisa for a biomarker of thyroid dysfunction, thyroid peroxidase autoantibodies (TPO-Ab), in dried blood spots

    Open Access•Geeta N Eick, Tara J Cepon‐robin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of PHYSIOLOGICAL…•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 25

Background The prevalence of allergic and autoimmune conditions has been steadily increasing in wealthy nations over the past century. One hypothesis put forward to explain this is the Old Friends Hypothesis, which posits that increased hygiene, urbanization, and lifestyle changes have reduced our exposure to parasites and microbes that we co-evolved with, resulting in immune dysregulation. However, research in traditionally living populations, w…

  • Tradeoffs between immune function and childhood growth among Amazonian forager-horticulturalists

    Open Access•Samuel S Urlacher, Peter M Elias et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2018

Significance The energetic impact of immune function on human growth remains unclear. Using data from Amazonian forager-horticulturalists, we show that diverse, low-level immune activity predicts reduced childhood growth over periods of competing energy use ranging from 1 wk to 20 mo. We also demonstrate that modest body fat stores (i.e., energy reserves) protect children from the particularly detrimental impact of acute inflammation on growth. T…

  • Regional variation in Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura infections by age cohort and sex

    Open Access•Theresa E Gildner, Tara J Cepon-Robins et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of PHYSIOLOGICAL…•2016

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection peaks during childhood and varies by sex. The impact of market integration (MI) (increasing production for and consumption from a market-based economy) on these infection patterns, however, is unclear. In this study, STH infection is examined by sex and age among indigenous Shuar inhabiting two regions of Amazonian Ecuador: (1) the modestly market-integrated Upano Valley (UV) and (2) the more …

  • Heterogeneous effects of market integration on sub-adult body size and nutritional status among the Shuar of Amazonian Ecuador

    Open Access•Samuel S Urlacher, Melissa A Liebert et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2016•Cited by: 34•References: 27

This study provides novel insight into the complex socio-ecological pathways linking MI, physical growth and health among the Shuar and other indigenous Amazonian populations

  • Physical function and activity among older adults in Jodhpur, India

    Open Access•Tyler M Barrett, Melissa A Liebert et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2015

This study provides further evidence for a positive relationship between physical activity and functional ability among older adults and between physical activity and cardiovascular health among women in India
