Socioeconomic status and non-fatal injuries among Canadian adolescents
The results suggest that differences related to the measures of SES chosen and the causes of injury under study may both contribute to discrepancies in past research on SES and non-fatal injuries among adolescents. To clarify the potential SES-injury relationship among youth, the findings emphasize a need for a greater understanding of the meaning and relevance of different SES measures for adolescents, and for an exploration of the pathways thro…
The Potential Effectiveness of Warning Labels on Cigarette Packages
Allometric scaling of strength in an independently living population age 55–86 years
Most physiological functions vary allometrically with body size; however, few investigators have examined the relationship between strength and body size with allometric scaling. Thus, we hypothesized that allometric analysis would reveal that both the amount and quality of muscle are significant determinants of strength in the elderly. Allometric analyses were used to determine the influence of limb cross‐sectional area (CSA), physical activity,…
Comprehensive tobacco control policies and the smoking behaviour of Canadian adults
To be effective, tobacco control must comprise a mix of strategies as men and women respond differently to health education and restrictions on public smoking; taxation, reflected in higher cigarette prices, is the only one of these measures related to smoking for both sexes. This model permits calculations of the level of increase in each measure that is required to reduce the prevalence of smoking by a specified amount
Lung function in older humans
An allometric model was used to determine the important factors related to the decline in forced expiratory volume (FEV1.0) across ages 55-86 years in independently living men and women. Measurements were available from a randomized sample of 181 men and 203 women residing in London, Ontario, Canada. The effects of height, age, sex, adiposity, fat free mass (FFM), grip strength and physical activity (PA) on FEV1.0 were assessed using an allometri…
Factors associated with refusal to treat HIV-infected patients
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated dentists refusal to treat patients who have HIV. METHODS: A survey was mailed to a random sample of all licensed dentists in Canada, with 3 follow-up attempts (n = 6444). Data were weighted to allow for probability of selection and nonresponse and analyzed with Pearson's chi 2 and multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: The response rate was 66%. Of the respondents, 32% had knowingly treated HIV-infected patient…
Nonresponse Bias in a Survey of Ontario Dentists' Infection Control and Attitudes Concerning HIV
The effects of late response and nonresponse bias on the results of this study were small. However, these results cannot be generalized beyond the study population, and obtaining high response rates and testing for nonresponse bias in surveys of attitudes related to HIV are recommended
The relationship of cigarette prices and no-smoking bylaws to the prevalence of smoking in Canada
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze the association of cigarette prices and no-smoking bylaws with the prevalence of smoking. METHODS: Data on individual smoking status were taken from two national household surveys in Canada. Current cigarette price, the 1-year and 10-year increase in price, and the extent of local restrictions on public smoking were added to the model. Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds of being a sm…
Body mass indices and skeletal size in 394 Canadians aged 55–86 years
Demispan (finger web to midline) is the preferred index of stature in the study of the elderly where height is unreliable because of age-related loss or distortion. As a consequence, two alternative mass indices, Demiquet (male mass. demispan-2) and Mindex (female mass. demispan-1), have been proposed for use in the elderly, in place of body mass index calculated from height, which might be suspect. These gender-specific indices reflect the squar…
