HIV Risk and Protective Factors in the Context of Alcohol and Substance Use During Pride
Access to conception planning information and services for people living with HIV in Ontario, Canada: A community-based research study
Decreased mortality, decreased risk of vertical HIV transmission, and many people living with HIV (PLWHIV) being of reproductive age have led many PLWHIV to consider pregnancy. However, scarce data exist regarding the conception planning resources required and available for PLWHIV to have safe and healthy pregnancies. This study aimed to identify gaps between the need for, knowledge of, and access to conception planning information and services a…
Speaking the Dialect”: Understanding Public Discourse in the Aftermath of an HIV Vaccine Trial Shutdown
Objectives. We investigated how persons from key populations at higher risk of HIV exposure interpreted the process and outcomes of the Step Study HIV-1 vaccine trial, which was terminated early, and implications for willingness to participate in and community support for HIV vaccine research. Methods. We used qualitative methods and a community-based approach in 9 focus groups (n = 72) among ethnically and sexually diverse populations and 6 semi…
Delayed application of condoms with safer and unsafe sex: Factors associated with HIV risk in a community sample of gay and bisexual men
While condom use remains one of the most effective measures to prevent the sexual transmission of HIV, decreasing attention appears to be given to its importance and techniques of effective use relative to potential biomedical technologies. This paper focuses on delayed condom application (DCA), one practice which has been implicated in HIV transmission among gay and bisexual men. It examines the prevalence of the practice within a gay community …
Effects of the Criminalization of HIV Transmission in Cuerrier on Men Reporting Unprotected Sex with Men
Silence, assent and HIV risk
Based on interviews with 34 men, almost all of whom have unprotected sex with men most or all of the time, this paper documents the interactional process, narrative elements and meaning construction in situations of 'bareback' sex. Narratives show the differentiated cultural capital circulating among distinct circuits of gay and bisexual men that define the taken-for-granted rules of conduct for sexual interactions and give rise to high-risk situ…
Risk construction in the reinfection discourses of HIV-positive men
Interviews with HIV-positive gay and bisexual men in Toronto show a widespread attentiveness to the question of HIV reinfection or super-infection as a concern in safer sex decision-making. Examination of HIV reinfection discourses shows how sero-positive men find themselves at the nexus of expert knowledge and responsibilizing trends in relying on, interpreting, and extending medical evidence in constructing risk for self and others. While not a…
Aids optimism, condom fatigue, or self‐esteem? Explaining unsafe sex among gay and bisexual men
This study examines leading explanations for unsafe sex in light of in-depth interviews with 102 high-risk gay and bisexual men in Toronto to see how well they engage with the social circumstances and reasoning processes of men in their sexual relationships. We argue that there is an inadequate fit between some of the leading explanations and the discursive accounts provided by high risk men themselves. Their accounts focus on unsafe sex occurrin…
