Effects of soy protein isolate and soy peptide preload on gastric emptying rate and postprandial glycemic control in healthy humans
Background This study aims to compare the effects of soy protein isolate (SPI) and soy peptide (PEP) preload 30 min before a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) on the gastric emptying rate, plasma insulin, and blood glucose responses. Methods Nine healthy young subjects were evaluated on four occasions. The participants consumed a 200-ml solution containing either 20 g of SPI or PEP in experiment 1. In experiment 2, 30 min after consuming ei…
Acute responses of regional vascular conductance to oral ingestion of fructose in healthy young humans
BACKGROUND: Recently, it was reported in healthy young subjects that fructose containing drinks increased blood pressure acutely, without any apparent change in total vascular conductance (TVC). However, because it is well known that the splanchnic vasculature is dilated by oral fructose ingestion, it is assumed to be the concomitant vasoconstriction in other peripheral region(s) that is responsible for this finding. Thus, the purpose of this stu…
Peripheral and central vascular conductance influence on post-exercise hypotension
BACKGROUND: Post-exercise hypotension (PEH) following prolonged dynamic exercise arises from increased total vascular conductance (TVC) via skeletal muscle vasodilation. However, arterial vasodilation of skeletal musculatures does not entirely account for the rise in TVC. The aim of the present study was to determine the contribution of vascular conductance (VC) of the legs, arms, kidneys and viscera to TVC during PEH. METHODS: Eight subjects per…
Effect of Intensity of Dynamic Exercise on Pupil Diameter in Humans
To test the hypothesis that pupil diameter, which is innervated by the autonomic nervous system, increases with exercise intensity, we determined pupil diameter during incremental exercise in eight healthy subjects. The subjects performed an incremental ergometer exercise in a room illuminated at 90-100 lx. We continuously measured pupil diameter and heart rate before, during, and after the exercise. Pupil diameter increased significantly with ex…
Effect of Aerobic Leg Exercise Training on Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue of Thigh in Young Japanese Women
A one-legged training model was adopted to assess the influence of moderate-intensity exercise training on subcutaneous adipose tissue, especially focusing on the trained limb. Eight young sedentary Japanese women (ages 21-23 yr) participated in a 12-week training program. The leg was assigned randomly to trained or untrained limb. Each subject performed a supervised 60-min one-legged cycle ergometer training session three times a week. The exerc…
Autonomic Nervous Activities Assessed by Heart Rate Variability in Pre- and Post-adolescent Japanese
There are many studies with respect to the age-related change of the characteristics of beat-to-beat heart rate variability (HRV), reflected by cardiac autonomic control, especially focusing on adulthood (i.e., aging related to the incidence of metabolic syndrome) in Japanese individuals. However, it is not still clear how basic control matures during childhood. This study was, therefore, designed to explore the HRV characteristics of pre- and po…
The Relationships of Anaerobic Threshold and O 2 -kinetics at Constant-load Works
The purpose of this study were to confirm the steady-state Vo2 during work and the fast component of bi-exponential curves durving recovery at a constant-load works below anaerobic threshold (AT) level, and to examine the adequacy of criteria for determination of AT. Subjects (5 young males) performed an incremental-load ergometer work test in which the initial work load was 4min unloaded cycling, and thereafter the work load was increased 150kgm…
The Effect of Air Temperature on Maximal Oxygen Intake
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of air temperature on maximal oxygen intake. Ten adult males were used as subjects. The maximal oxygen intake was measured at 10°C, 20°C, 30°C, 40°C, and 50°C of air temperature, all at 50% of relative humidity. The largest value of maximal oxygen intake was obtained at an air temperature of 30°C and was significantly greater than the value at 20°C and 40°C. A polynomial equation was used to…
