  • Historical Patterns of Regional Population Migration in China: A Novel Surname‐Based Analysis

Open Access•Xiaohui Fan, Xuemin Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Biological…•2026

  • A Study of the Spatial Correlogram Patterns of Chinese Surnames

Open Access•Xiaohui Fan, Xuemin Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2025

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the historical diffusion and migration patterns of Chinese surnames by analyzing their spatial correlograms. The primary objectives are to identify typical correlogram categories, characterize each category, and explore the factors influencing the historical diffusion and migration processes that have shaped the spatial distributions of Chinese surnames. DATA AND METHODS: The data used in this study come from C…

  • A study of the spatial distribution characteristics of Chinese surnames

Open Access•Xiaohui Fan, Yuan Gao et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2024

OBJECTIVES: The spatial distribution of Chinese surnames is diverse and provides rich information about the evolution of human society. This study aims to propose several indices to quantify the spatial distribution characteristics of Chinese common surnames and to explore how these distributions are related to historical evolution. METHODS: This study uses data from China's ID information system covering 1.28 billion people across 362 cities. Ba…

  • Regional surname affinity: A spatial network approach

Open Access•Yongbin Shi, Le Li et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 49

OBJECTIVE: We investigate surname affinities among areas of modern-day China, by constructing a spatial network, and making community detection. It reports a geographical genealogy of the Chinese population that is result of population origins, historical migrations, and societal evolutions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We acquire data from the census records supplied by China's National Citizen Identity Information System, including the surname and re…

  • An index of Chinese surname distribution and its implications for population dynamics

Open Access•Jiawei Chen, Liujun Chen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 18

OBJECTIVE: We propose an index to characterize the key feature of Chinese surname distributions and investigate its implications for population structure and dynamics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The surname dataset was obtained from the National Citizen Identity Information Center, which contains 1.28 billion Chinese citizens enrolled in 2007, excluding those of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. An index, the coverage ratio of stretched exponential distr…

  • A study of surnames in china through isonymy

Open Access•Yan Liu, Liujun Chen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2012•Cited by: 7•References: 4

The isonymy structure of 1.28 billion people registered in China's National Citizen Identity Information System was studied at the provincial, prefectural, and county administrative division levels. The isonymy was 0.026 for China as a whole. The average value of isonymy was 0.033 for the 30 provinces, 0.035 for the 334 prefectures, and 0.040 for the 2811 counties. The isonymy in China was much higher than in other countries. This finding may be …

  • Population genetic studies in three Chinese minorities

    Open Access•H W Goedde, H-G Benkmann et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1984•Cited by: 6•References: 20

Three minority ethnic groups from China (Mongolians, Koreans, Zhuang) were examined with respect to the genetic markers GLO, GPT, ACP, ESD, 6‐PGD, PGM 1 subtypes, C3, and TF. Significant variations were noted for the gene frequencies of GLO, GPT, ESD, sub PGM 1 between Zhuang and Mongolians; for GPT, ACP, ESD, sub PGM 1 between Zhuang and Koreans; and for GLO between Mongolians and Koreans
