  • Ethnography, Naturalism, and Paul Corey

    Open Access•Paul Durrenberger•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Humanism•2019•References: 26

Naturalism is a style of writing that seems suited to the American condition. It is detailed, descriptive, and realistic. In short, it resembles ethnography. I discuss Iowa author Paul Corey, his engagement with this movement and its relationship with ethnography

  • Living up to Our Words

    Paul Durrenberger•ARTICLE•Human Organization•2014

As I look back over more than 40 years in the academy I see universities evolving toward profit-oriented corporate models and concurrent management and accounting techniques including the allocation of teaching duties to highly qualified but low-paid PhDs with no hope of tenure-track jobs. This effectively removes tenure as protection for academic freedom and exposes new PhDs to years of unrewarding, badly-paid work with little hope of the writin…

  • To Dream of Fish: The Causes of Icelandic Skippers' Fishing Success

Gísli Pálsson, Paul Durrenberger•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•1982•Cited by: 15

Contrary to the folk image that skippers are important in determining fishing success, we conclude that the skipper effect is a myth. We reach this conclusion by three converging analyses: (1) we show that the size of fishing boats and the number of trips account for most of the variance in catch, leaving very little unexplained variance to be explained by a skipper effect; (2) we show that there is no relationship between experience and success;…

  • A Theory of Analogy

Paul Durrenberger, John W Morrison•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•1977

We discuss the form of analogies and suggest that analogies of the form A:B::C:D are arguments which assert that the relation of A to B is the same as that of C to D. We analyze and formally describe the relations of comparability and opposition in minimal domains. We define and discuss the nature of symmetric and asymmetric features as semantic markers and show the importance of these ideas for the analysis of analogies. Then we indicate some di…
