Experiencing Roman religion on Hadrian’s Wall: Embodied interaction in an antiquarian Museum
This paper explores the challenge of restoring the sensory experience of archaeological museums, particularly through the engagement of touch, in order to enable visitors to have an embodied museum experience. The traditional ocular-centric approach of museums, emphasising visual and information-led approaches, has led to a disconnect between visitors and the non-visual sensory aspects of material collections. My Roman Pantheon (MRP) was implemen…
Introduction to the special issue on time and HCI
This special issue focuses on new perspectives of time within HCI research. We begin by explicating how HCI’s views of time have broadened over the years, going beyond the traditional subjective-objective dichotomy. We describe how the HCI community was originally anchored to clock time, but more recently the field has begun to incorporate the existential, social, and cultural dimensions of time. We introduce the papers in this special issue by c…
Envisioning, designing, and rapid prototyping heritage installations with a tangible interaction toolkit
A body of HCI work focuses on cultural heritage settings, such as museums, galleries, and historic sites – domains where established digital technologies such as interactive screens and mobile guides are used by end-users individually and in groups, and where innovative designs can be deployed in order to augment the user experience through a variety of interaction frames, from mixed reality, to tangible, embedded, and embodied interaction (see H…

Demo hour
Over four years, meSch produced over a dozen demos: small experiments focused on a specific technology or place; interactive stations designed as part of large exhibitions open to the public; and tangible interaction and data souvenirs that bridge the physical-digital divide. The four projects presented here offer a sample of visitor experiences we created, deployed, and evaluated. Daniela Petrelli, Director of the meSch project
Making virtual reconstructions part of the visit: An exploratory study
Walking and designing with cultural heritage volunteers
Cultural heritage is a variegated field of inquiry for human-computer interaction (HCI), including both efforts to understand how digital technologies mediate human activities in heritage settings and the development of interactives to support the interpretation of heritage. Cultural heritage takes many forms and heritage settings vary greatly, from museums exhibiting traditional “glass case” displays to historic buildings, urban areas, and open-…
There is more in personal heritage than data
On Heritage aims to offer and promote a rich discussion at the intersection of art, performance, and culture that expands the boundaries of HCI while broadening our understanding of how things of the past come to matter in the present. Elisa Giaccardi, Editor
