  • Coprolite diversity from the archeological site Gruta Do Gentio Ll, Unaí, Minas Gerais, Brazil

    Open Access•Ludmila Gurjão, Ondemar Dias et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2024•References: 6

The first paleoparasitological analyses in Brazil are related to the Gruta do Gentio ll (GGll) an archeological site related to the beginning of the Una ceramist tradition (13,000–410 cal B.P.), with two subsistence horizons, an ancient one related do hunter-gatherers, and a more recent one related to a horticulturist population. Crucial cultural traces of Una tradition such as pottery, fabric, adornments made from animal teeth and shells, and fo…

  • The effects of dehydration and local soil on parasite recovery

    Open Access•Darío Alejandro Ramirez, M Fabra et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Experimental paleoparasitological approaches have been used in order to optimize the methodology previously to the application in archeological samples. In this study we evaluated the action of dehydration and local soil (Central Argentina) on the loss of parasite eggs in experimental coprolites, using two parasitological techniques: spontaneous sedimentation and sucrose-flotation. Experimental coprolites comprised fresh human feces, positive for…

  • Helminth infection and human mobility in sambaquis

Open Access•Alena Mayo Iñiguez, Lorrayne Brito et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•References: 8

Sambaquis or shellmounds are archeological sites constructed by hunter-fisher-gatherers that inhabited the Brazilian coast about 10,000–2000 yrs BP. Jabuticabeira II (JABII: 2890 ± 55 to 1805 ± 65 BP) is one of dozens of contemporaneous sambaquis of the Santa Catarina state, South Brazil, and contains hundreds of neatly organized burials, indicating great population density. In order to gather information about the health, diet and way of life of…

  • Paleoparasitological analysis of human remains from a European cemetery of the 17th–19th century in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  • Paleoepidemiology of Intestinal Parasites and Lice in Pre-Columbian South America

    Open Access•Adauto Araujo, K Reinhard et al.•ARTICLE•Chungara•2011•Cited by: 3

Some human parasites originated in prehominid ancestors in Africa. Nematode species, such as Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm), hookworms and Trichuris trichiura are shared by humans and other close phylogenetic primates (Pan and Gorilla), showing that they infected a common ancestor to this group. When humans migrated from Africa to other continents they carried these parasites wherever climate conditions allowed parasite transmission from host …
