  • New records of three moss species ( Ptychostomum pseudotriquetrum, Schistidium antarctici , and Coscinodon lawianus ) from the southern Prince Charles Mountains, Mac.Robertson Land, Antarctica

    Open Access•M L Skotnicki, P M Selkirk et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2012

We have used a combination of traditional morphological examination and molecular DNA analysis to characterise 16 moss specimens collected from the Mawson Escarpment and Clemence Massif, exposures of bedrock and glacial debris in the southern Prince Charles Mountains of East Antarctica. The nuclear ribosomal ITS region and the chloroplast rps 4 gene were sequenced and compared with those of other mosses known from coastal East Antarctica. The mos…

  • Mosses of sub-Antarctic Heard Island

    Open Access•P M Selkirk, Jennie Whinam et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2008•References: 20

During an early summer visit in 2000, mosses were collected from sites around Heard Island. Three species, Bryoerythrophyllum recurvirostrum (Hedw.) P.C.Chen, Philonotis cf. tenuis (Taylor) Reichardt and Syntrichia filaris (Müll.Hall) R.H. Zander have been added to the list of moss species known from the island, bringing the total to 40 moss taxa. Syntrichia anderssonii (abcngström) R.H. Zander was found with sporophytes, whereas previously its s…

  • Return of the megaherbs

    Open Access•Jennie Whinam, P M Selkirk et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2004•Cited by: 1

Buildings were constructed and artefacts left behind on sub-Antarctic Heard Island, associated with Antarctic research expeditions since 1926. Both bryophytes and vascular plants are colonising many parts of the now derelict buildings. On these structures and artefacts, the authors recorded four species of vascular plants out of the 11 that occur on Heard Island and nine species of mosses out of the 37 recorded from Heard Island. The vascular pla…

  • Late Quaternary aeolian dunes on the presently humid Blue Mountains, Eastern Australia

    Open Access•P P Hesse, G S Humphreys et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2003

  • The influence of L.R. Blake, pioneering sub-Antarctic geographer and geologist, on the topographic mapping of Macquarie Island

    Open Access•H J G Dartnall, HJG Dartnall et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2001•References: 1

New biographical information is given about L.R. Blake, surveyor and geologist at Macquarie Island during the 1911–14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Blake's survey of the island yielded maps that in significant respects are more accurate than the current topographic map of 1971, which, with one exception, adopted his height measurements for the 23 named peaks. The more recent height estimates for these peaks are assessed, and it is concluded …

  • Landform and Vegetation Change in the Greaves Creek Basin

    P M Selkirk, Donald Adamson et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Geographer•2001

Greaves Creek has cut a hanging valley through the entire Triassic sandstone sequence near Blackheath in the western Blue Mountains, New South Wales. Downstream of Beauchamp Falls, it cuts into Permian strata in the Grose Gorge. The hanging valley has a valley-in-valley structure. The narrow inner valley is bounded by high cliffs and its floor is cut by a deep narrow slot canyon where stream incision has occurred without valley widening. The cour…
