An experimental and computational study of an Estonian single-subject word naming experiment
This study reports a large-scale single-subject experiment combining the word naming task with eye-tracking. Response variables (first fixation duration, total fixation duration, number of fixations, word naming latency, and spoken word duration) were subjected to statistical analyses with generalized additive models (GAMs). We compared GAMs with classical lexical predictors such as word frequency and inflectional paradigm size with GAMs that wer…
Morphological effects in Estonian spontaneous speech
This study investigates the role of morphological structure and paradigmatic information in the perception of Estonian inflected forms in spontaneous speech. Using a large-scale online word-typing task, we examine how segment deletion in the base or suffix, realized inflectional paradigm size, and whole-word frequency affect typing accuracy, speed, and duration. Our results indicate that reduced words are more difficult and take longer to identif…
Skin conductance response and habituation to emotional facial expressions and words
Skin conductance response (SCR) serves as a dependable marker of sympathetic activation used to measure emotional arousal. This study investigates the impact of presentation modality (face or word) on the degree of emotional discrimination elicited by SCR. Facial expressions or words associated with six basic emotions-anger, happiness, disgust, fear, sadness, and surprise-were studied among 102 participants. The amplitude of SCR was accurately pr…
Text reading in English as a second language
Research into second language (L2) reading is an exponentially growing field. Yet, it still has a relatively short supply of comparable, ecologically valid data from readers representing a variety of first languages (L1). This article addresses this need by presenting a new data resource called MECO L2 (Multilingual Eye Movements Corpus), a rich behavioral eye-tracking record of text reading in English as an L2 among 543 university student speake…
Paradigmatic and Syntagmatic Effects in Estonian Spontaneous Speech
Recent evidence indicates that a word’s paradigmatic neighbors affect production. However, these findings have mostly been obtained in careful laboratory settings using words in isolation, and thus ignoring potential effects that may arise from the syntagmatic context, which is typically present in spontaneous speech. The current corpus analysis investigates paradigmatic and syntagmatic effects in Estonian spontaneous speech. Following work on En…
