A meta-analytic review of cultural variation in affect valuation
What affective states do people ideally want to feel and why? In Affect Valuation Theory, Tsai et al. (2006) proposed and observed that (a) how people would ideally like to feel (their "ideal affect") differs from how they actually feel (their "actual affect"), and (b) cultural factors shape people's ideal affect even more than their actual affect. In this individual participant data meta-analysis, we reexamined these two premises in a combined d…
Sleep loss and emotion: A systematic review and meta-analysis of over 50 years of experimental research
From Africa to the Americas: Ethnicity in the Early Black Communities of the Americas
Any analysis of African cultural continuities in the Americas confronts certain methodological minefields. The first African slaves arrived with Cortés during the military invasion, and by 1640 perhaps as many as a hundred thousand had been enslaved in the colony. This chapter addresses the large question of the degree to which African-born slaves were able to reestablish and maintain ethnic ties and their ethnicity in the slave societies of the …
Sleep Disturbances and Delayed Sleep Timing are Associated with Greater Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms in Youth Following Hurricane Harvey
Sleepy and Secluded: Sleep Disturbances are Associated With Connectedness in Early Adolescent Social Networks
Studies in adults suggest that sleep disturbances predict poorer socioemotional skills and impaired social interactions. However, little is known regarding how sleep disturbances are associated with social processes during adolescence, a period when both sleep neurobiology and social relationships are undergoing dramatic developmental changes. The current study examined associations among sleep disturbances and peer connectedness in a sample of m…

Adolescents' Motivations to Engage in Social Distancing During the Covid-19 Pandemic: Associations With Mental and Social Health
Sleep restriction alters children’s positive emotional responses, but effects are moderated by anxiety
BACKGROUND: An abundance of cross-sectional research links inadequate sleep with poor emotional health, but experimental studies in children are rare. Further, the impact of sleep loss is not uniform across individuals and pre-existing anxiety might potentiate the effects of poor sleep on children's emotional functioning. METHODS: A sample of 53 children (7-11 years, M = 9.0; 56% female) completed multimodal, assessments in the laboratory when re…
Historical Trends in Concerns About Social Issues Across Four Decades Among U.S. Adolescents
This study examined adolescents' concerns about social issues and how these concerns have changed over historical time. Separate cohorts of U.S. high school seniors (N = 110,953; 51.1% female) reported their worries about four social issues (crime/violence, economic problems, hunger/poverty, race relations) every year from 1976 to 2015. Youth were most concerned with crime/violence, followed by economic problems, hunger/poverty, and race relation…

From Africa to the Americas: Ethnicity in the Early Black Communities of the Americas
With its waters connecting the continents of Europe, Africa, North America, and South America, the Atlantic Ocean has facilitated a sustained movement and interaction among the peoples of these disparate lands. This chapter addresses the large question of the degree to which African-born slaves were able to reestablish and maintain ethnic ties and their ethnicity in the slave societies of the Americas. It argues that ethnicity informed spousal ch…

Inward Yearnings: Jamaica's Journey to Nationhood
Inward Yearnings: Jamaica’s Journey to Nationhood is a pioneering case study of an Anglo-Caribbean island’s search for a racial selfhood, its nervous embrace of its African heritage and ultimately a nationalism that reflected those inner longings. These complex and interrelated processes manifested themselves with the founding of the Universal Negro Improvement Association by Marcus Garvey in 1914,the emergence of Rastafarianism and the Back to A…

Young Adolescents’ Responses to Positive Events: Associations With Positive Affect and Adjustment

On daily reports, adolescents reported their positive emotional reactions to their best event each day. A week later, they reported their responses to their most intense positive event across the 4 da…

Slavery, Abolition, and Emancipation in the New World
The historiography of the black experience in this hemisphere is still in its infancy. There has been, to be sure, a significant number of books addressing important aspects of black life and culture published within the last decade. Specialists in the study of the slave trade and slavery have seen a reformulation of the questions asked of the sources, and the methodology has undergone considerable refinement. North American historians in particu…
