  • Race realism goes both ways

    Open Access•Rob Desalle, Ian Tattersall•ARTICLE•History & Philosophy of the Life…•2025•References: 2

We examine the philosophy of race from the perspective of the identified problems with such a philosophy - domain problems, deference problems and mismatch problems. Any philosophy of race should consider at least two domains of human endeavor - the social and the natural. In most cases the social domain defers to the natural domain for a biological explanation for race. Some researchers suggest that there is an impasse in the natural domain that…

  • Conservation Genetics, Precision Conservation, and De‐extinction

Open Access•Rob Desalle, George Amato•ARTICLE•The Hastings Center Report•2017

It has been estimated that three species on the planet now go extinct every hour and that this rate is orders of magnitude higher than the planet has seen in previous catastrophic extinction events. We clearly are in the midst of a sixth extinction, and this one is different from the previous five. Why? This sixth extinction is caused by the activity of a single species—us. If there is any hope of ameliorating this extinction, it will entirely be…

  • Taking race out of human genetics

Open Access•Michael Yudell, Dorothy Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2016

Engaging a century-long debate about the role of race in science

  • A global reference for human genetic variation

Open Access•Corresponding authors, Adam Auton et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2015

The 1000 Genomes Project set out to provide a comprehensive description of common human genetic variation by applying whole-genome sequencing to a diverse set of individuals from multiple populations. Here we report completion of the project, having reconstructed the genomes of 2,504 individuals from 26 populations using a combination of low-coverage whole-genome sequencing, deep exome sequencing, and dense microarray genotyping. We characterized…

  • Genetic assessment of a white‐collared×red‐fronted lemur hybrid zone at Andringitra, Madagascar

Open Access•Yael M Wyner, Yael Wyner et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2002

We examined a purported lemur ( Eulemur fulvus rufus × E. albocollaris ) hybrid zone at Andringitra, Madagascar, using sequences from five genes (one mitochondrial gene (d‐loop) and four nuclear introns (hemopexin, malic enzyme, ceruloplasmin, and microsatellite 26 flanking region)), from 60 individuals ( E. albocollaris (n = 16), E.f. rufus (n = 14), E. collaris (n = 9), and purported hybrids from Andringitra (n = 21)). Diagnostic (d‐loop and mi…

  • Flies and congruence

    Open Access•Rob Desalle•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1994•References: 42

Competing phylogenetic hypotheses have become the rule in modern systematics. While the problem of incongruence between character sets has become extremely acute due to the generation of molecular data, it is by no means specific to molecular and morphological comparisons. The role of the modern systematist is to interpret incongruence between character sets and to come to some conclusion regarding a phylogenetic hypothesis of the organisms in qu…
