  • Moving camps

    Open Access•Zachary Whyte, M A Ulfstjerne•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2025•References: 42

This paper traces a cluster of asylum housing units that were shipped from Denmark to Bosnia in 1996, ostensibly to house repatriated Bosnians, and which remain in place today. That is to say, camps that were literally moved. These buildings and the logistics surrounding their movement served to structure a range of humanitarian and administrative connections both in and between Denmark and Bosnia. Instead of tracing movements, networks, and care…

  • Songs of the Pandemic

    Open Access•M A Ulfstjerne•ARTICLE•Anthropology in Action•2020

This article explores virtual common singing in the time of partial lockdown in Denmark through an auto-ethnographic account. The phenomenon of singing together on Danish public service television gained immense popularity as a response to the pandemic as one-fifth of the population tuned in, in many cases broadcasting themselves while signing. Looking at common singing as an emergent ‘infrastructure for troubling times’, this article takes up qu…

  • Iron bubbles

    Open Access•M A Ulfstjerne•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 41

Financial bubbles are generally understood retrospectively as ruptures or bursts, indexing some form of radical change. Conversely, this article proposes that when engaged ethnographically, bubbles are premised upon a collectively imagined continuity. Empirically, I unpack investment rationales in the wake of a local resource boom in a high-growth region in Inner Mongolia. Among interlocutors, anticipated price increases in property investments w…

  • Taking Part

    Open Access•Max D Woodworth, M A Ulfstjerne et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Asian Studies•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 31

This article examines how a resource bonanza in Ordos Municipality, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, in the 2000s translated into broad-based participation in informal lending networks and drove a remarkable, but short-lived, phase of urban expansion and private wealth accumulation. Local lending networks inflated enormous credit and property bubbles, which ultimately burst in 2011 with severe ramifications for Ordos's urban expansion and househ…

  • The Wasteland of Creative Production

    Open Access•M A Ulfstjerne•ARTICLE•The Copenhagen Journal of Asian…•2013•References: 7

With the new magnitude for the relatively unhindered production and circulation of artworks, galleries and contemporary art museums are burgeoning across the larger cities of China. This article provides an empirical example of how contemporary and avant-garde art is produced and valuated in the art communities that thrive on the recent international recognition of Chinese artworks. It addresses some of the effects that occur when art production …
