Born to be broken? deliberate fragmentation and its pattern and mechanics in the case of Neolithic anthropomorphic figurines from the settlement site Těšetice-Kyjovice – Sutny (South Moravia, Lengyel …
Ground obsidian artefacts from an Early Eneolithic site in Nitra-Selenec (Slovakia)
Obsidian was an important lithic raw material in the prehistory of the Western Carpathians. Whereas the use of knapped obsidian in this region is well known, the production of polished artefacts remains undocumented. Two obsidian finds were unearthed in 2009–2010 during the excavation of an Early Eneolithic (4300–4000 BP) site in Nitra-Selenec. Grinding was combined with pressure knapping, and the purpose and position of grinding in the operation…
New approaches reviving old findings
Neolithic anthropomorphic figurines, usually manufactured from ceramics, were found in large quantities at many sites. Despite past efforts to interpret their meaning, research has been stagnating for two main reasons. First, figurines have been considered artefacts of high heritage value and, therefore, they are usually not allowed to be analysed using invasive methods, which would be the most effective in ceramic research, allowing for identify…
Technical advantages bridging the preservation limits of painted decoration of Neolithic ceramic figurines
Painting on ceramic objects is one of the most outstanding features of visual narration of the Neolithic material culture in Southeastern and partly in Central Europe. Unfortunately, post-firing painting is usually poorly preserved due to deposition conditions. Moreover, it may have been damaged or contaminated during post-excavation and conservation processes in the past. This project studies how new methods of pigment traces visual detection br…

Exceptional Set of Lithic Arrowheads from an Early Bronze Age Site in Hosty (South Bohemia)
During the Early Bronze Age, the Hosty settlement in South Bohemia was important nodal point on the long-distance trade route con¬necting the Alpine and Danube regions with the Únětice-culture world and northern Europe. Its well-preserved settlement layers con¬tained imported exotics, artefacts, and raw materials from all directions. An outstanding set of 33 arrowheads forms the largest known projectile collection from settlement sites of the Ear…
Individual or communal? Exploring the social dynamics of ceramic production at the Lengyel circular-enclosure site of Těšetice-Kyjovice – Sutny, South Moravia
Two faces of warrior elite. Stone wrist-guards and wrist-guard-like artefacts
First evidence of the production of Ginalski E5 button spurs from copper alloy in Central Europe
Ginalski‐type E5 button spurs made from a Cu alloy are a characteristic attribute of the Middle Roman period in barbarian Europe. The find of part of a mould made of non‐ferrous metal at the Luleč site in the district of Vyškov, Czech Republic, provided key evidence for explaining the issue of their production. The discovery of this unique artefact showed that based on current knowledge, the spurs made from a Cu alloy were also produced in the Mi…
Proto-Eneolithic settlement feature for leather processing
The state of knowledge of the Epi-Lengyel settlement of South Moravia is still limited to a few isolated pub lished sites, with a predominant focus on the typological evaluation of pottery. Collections of lithics remain unevaluated or are treated mainly typologically. The inventory of the settlement feature from Lidická Street, Drnholec, Břeclav district, comprising, among other things, 45 lithic pieces, has made it possible to apply modern metho…
Identification of workshop activities by use-wear analysis
Settlement features containing raw antler material at various stages of manufacturing are not uncommon in Germanic settlements. However, their connection with craft production and subsequent interpretation as workshops producing antler objects are often inferred a priori, without being based on a deeper analysis. Many years of research into a Germanic settlement from the late Roman period and the beginning of the Migration period at the Zlechov-P…
External and Terminal Ballistics of Early Bronze Age Lithic Arrowheads
Lithic archery projectiles during the short timespan at the end of the Eneolithic period and the beginning of the Bronze Age in Europe have alternately been deemed hunting implements, weapons, or symbolic artefacts. More than 400 projectiles of this period have been analysed in 3D metrics. All but a few are triangular barbed projectiles. Despite differences in size and weight, four types of arrowheads have been identified using 3D shape alone. Ex…
Runes from Lány (Czech Republic) - The oldest inscription among Slavs. A new standard for multidisciplinary analysis of runic bones
When Roman administration and legions gradually withdrew from the outer provinces after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, they created a power void filled by various groups. The dynamic Migration Period that followed is usually considered to have ended when the Germanic Lombards allegedly left Central Europe and were replaced by Slavs. Whether or how Slavic and Germanic tribes interacted, however, is currently disputed. Here we report the fir…

Neolithic ceramic figurines. Several approaches to analytical study of the ceramic artefacts perceived as cultural heritage Neolitické keramické plastiky. Několik možností analytického studia památkov…
The article aims to present the results of the analysis of eight Neolithic ceramic figurines from the Lengyel culture settlement Těšetice-Kyjovice – Sutny, Czech Republic. We indicated the possibilities for acquiring analytical data, although destructive methods were unacceptable. We included methods neglected to date, but widely available in the common archaeological laboratory. Information on the composition of the ceramic matrix, the provenanc…
Hrob s kamennou konstrukcí ze střední doby bronzové z Mikulova - A grave with a stone construction from the Middle Bronze Age from Mikulov, south Moravia
A grave dated to the Middle Bronze Age with two burials in stone chambers represents a unique find in Moravia. The grave was the solitary feature from the given period at the excavation site, without any barrow identified. Part of the stone used for the construction is querns from a 40 km distant source, most of the structure is made of local limestone. Both burials – a child and an adult – were deposited simultaneously and furnished with persona…
Lithic Arrowheads of the Nitra Culture - The Use of Actual and Experimental Use-Wear Analyses to Identify the Differential Effects of Quiver Transportation
The use-wear analysis of lithic projectiles of the late prehistoric period reflects both functional and social information. In this study, results of the use-wear analysis of more than 300 projectiles of the Nitra culture – part of the epi-Corded Ware cultural complex from east Moravia and southwest Slovakia in Early Bronze Age Central Europe – were compared with experimentally reached wear. The origin of pronounced use-wear traces on the Nitra p…

Příspěvek se zabývá komplexní analýzou souboru štípané industrie z několikaletého záchranného výzkumu v poloze Podolí – Příčný, pocházejícího z hrobů i sídlištních objektů. Zahrnuje dosud nejpočetnější kolekci štípané industrie z funerálního kontextu únětické kultury na Moravě s detailní terénní dokumentací. Významné jsou vzhledem k poloze pohřebiště v blízkosti surovinového zdroje informace o používané surovině, a dále zmapování výskytu technolo…
