Proteomic Sex Estimation From Embedded Tooth Enamel
Teeth hold insights into childhood diet, health and demography—including chromosomal sex. Proteomic analysis can detect peptide biomarkers from amelogenin genes encoded on X and Y chromosomes, allowing sex estimation. Embedding resins, necessary for thin sectioning teeth, can damage analytical systems, preventing proteomic analysis. We present a micro‐dissection and chemical cleanup protocol for polymethylmethacrylate embedded teeth. Across itera…
A Refined Micromilling Protocol for Isotopic Reconstruction of Human Nursing Histories
Nitrogen stable isotope analysis (δ 15 N) of tooth collagen is routinely used to reconstruct nursing in the past, but few studies verify dietary interpretations. Here, we refine and test the precision of a published micromilling protocol to measure δ 15 N values in small, untreated dentine samples ( 15 N value patterning and variation consistent with high‐resolution sampling, broadly reflecting their known nursing histories. Compared with convent…
Forgotten Children
Fetal and infant skeletal remains in anatomical collections remain an underutilized yet important source of information on the interactions of gender, class, and religion during pregnancy and infant loss. The W. D. Trotter Anatomy Museum at the University of Otago in New Zealand, founded in the nineteenth century, houses more than 2,000 models and anatomical “specimens,” with many of the skeletal remains lacking provenience information. This rese…
