  • Precarious work and precarious urban spaces

Open Access•Peta Wolifson, Chris Gibson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 14

How does the precarity of creative work iterate with the precarity of creative spaces? In answer, we examine Covid-19 pandemic experiences of workers across diverse creative sectors in Sydney, Australia, drawing upon qualitative mapping research. Our findings highlight divergent experiences of precarity before and during the pandemic: many suffered, others adapted, some even thrived, depending upon the nature of their work, access to socialisatio…

  • Between Form and Formalization

    Andrew Warren, Andrew David Warren•ARTICLE•boundary 2•2021•References: 16

This is a review essay of Angus Fletcher’s posthumous The Topological Imagination: Spheres, Edges, and Islands (2016). Fletcher’s guiding intuition is that topology—a vast, foundational, formally rigorous pillar of modern mathematics—can offer fresh, useful ways of seeing and thinking about our world. These novel modes of perception and cognition are, Fletcher contends, naturally anticipated by literary creation and theories of it—hence the book’…

  • The Orient and the Young Romantics

Open Access•Andrew Warren, Andrew David Warren•BOOK•Orient and the Young Romantics•2014

Through close readings of major poems, this book examines why the second-generation Romantic poets - Byron, Shelley, and Keats - stage so much of their poetry in Eastern or Orientalized settings. It argues that they do so not only to interrogate their own imaginations, but also as a way of criticizing Europe's growing imperialism. For them the Orient is a projection of Europe's own fears and desires. It is therefore a charged setting in which to …

It is difficult to produce systems for judging sustainability, despite general enthusiasm for the concept. Here we evaluate the 'capitals' formulation for sustainability, which attempts to bring together the social and the environmental dimensions of the issue, and which has gained wide currency. We concentrate our attention on the 'natural capital' element in this framework, which has apparently been seen as its least problematical component. We…

Andrew Warren, Andrew David Warren•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•1995•Cited by: 26•References: 7

The recent debate about the sustainability of African pastoralism is taken to illustrate four general issues in environmental management: (i) the extent to which the institutionalization of environmental paradigms has made them conform to the Kuhnian model; (ii) the intimate link between environmental policies and paradigms; (iii) the need to understand the dialogue between scientists, policy-makers and educators and the environment; and (iv) the…

    F Kenneth Hare, Robert W Kates et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Geography•1977•Cited by: 2

In origin deserts are natural phenom-ena. Desertification, the aggravation or extension of such conditions, is a human phenomenon that arises from society's search for secure livelihoods in dry en-vironments. Even where this search is successful some environmental deteriora-tion is inevitable. In those instances where the pursuit of life and security goes awry, destructive processes are set in motion, the productive base deterio-rates, and the so…

  • Amazon Soils. A Reconnaissance of the Soils of the Brazilian Amazon Region

    A Warren, Andrew David Warren•REVIEW•Geographical Journal•1967•Cited by: 1

The study deals with soils of the Brazilian part of the Amazon basin. Most soils are Latosols, some with soft or hardened plinthite. The Latosols are characterized by a latosolic B horizon as defined in Brazil. Plinthite, its formation and morphology were extensively described. Five main types of hard plinthite were distinguished. The rather uniform soils of the Amazon Planalto proved to be mainly Kaolinitic Yellow Latosols. Various intergrades t…
