  • Bloggers' street movement and the right to the city. (Re)claiming Cairo's real and virtual “spaces of freedom”

Open Access•Wael Fahmi, Wael Salah Fahmi•ARTICLE•Environment and Urbanization•2009

Faced with formidable challenges to expression in Cairo's public spaces, urban blogger activists have developed new ways of articulating dissent, namely spatial tactics ranging from boycott campaigns, cyber-activism and protest art, to innovations in mobilization, means of communication and organizational flexibility. Through an 'imaginary' Urban Incubator, the paper proposes a (de)(re)constructive reading of a conflation of real cities under space-time compression, mapped into …

  • Reviving historical Cairo through pedestrianisation

    Wael Fahmi, Keith Sutton•ARTICLE•International Development…•2003•Cited by: 2

The al-Azhar Street axis was a major traffic route through and into Old Cairo. Now that a tunnel has been constructed to take through traffic it has been proposed that the street should be pedestrianised along with adjacent squares. The pedestrianisation scheme is assessed in terms of the views of various stakeholder groups including residents, merchants and planners. An alternative, less drastic pedestrianisation scheme is suggested, one that wo…
