  • Quantitative Dermatoglyphic asymmetry

    Bibha Karmakar, Mahua Sengupta•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2012

Quantitative Fluctuating (FA) and Directional asymmetry (DA) of dermatoglyphics on digito-palmar complex were analyzed in a group of 111 patients (males: 61, females: 50) with schizophrenia (SZ), and compared to an ethnically matched phenotypically healthy control (males: 60, females: 60) through MANOVA, ANOVA and canonical Discriminant analyses. With few exceptions, asymmetries are higher among patients, and this is more prominent in FA than DA.…

  • Genetics of anthropometric asymmetry in an Indian endogamous population—Vaidyas

Open Access•Mahua Sengupta, Bibha Karmakar•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2007

To understand the genetics of Fluctuating Asymmetry (FA) and Directional Asymmetry (DA), the present study comprised 14 bilateral morphometric traits from 200 Vaidya families including 824 individuals (of two generations) from North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The statistical analysis included: Regression analysis to remove the age effect, Familial correlation, Heritability estimation, Principal Component Analysis and Segregation Analysis (SA) usin…

  • Inheritance of six anthropometric traits in Vaidyas of West Bengal, India

Open Access•Mahua Sengupta, Bibha Karmakar•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2007

Anthropometric traits have a genetic basis but their mode of inheritance is quite complex in nature. There is evidence of major gene effect (along with polygenes) with Mendelian transmission

  • Genetics of Dermatoglyphic Asymmetry in Vaidyas of West Bengal, India

    Mahua Sengupta, Bibha Karmakar•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2006

In this study of the genetics of dermatoglyphic asymmetry, we collected bilateral finger and palm prints of 824 individuals from 200 families including 2 generations from an endogamous caste (Vaidya) in Barasat, North 24-Parganas District, West Bengal. Two main types of asymmetry (fluctuating asymmetry and directional asymmetry) were calculated between the two hands. The study includes familial correlation between first-degree relatives, principa…

  • Mode of inheritance of finger dermatoglyphic traits among Vaidyas of West Bengal, India

Open Access•Mahua Sengupta, Bibha Karmakar•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2004

The present report supports the evidence of the existence of a major gene on these dermatoglyphic traits and the transmission of this effect is consistent with Mendelian expectation

  • Interethnic comparisons of three endogamous groups of West Bengal with respect to two sets of variables

    Open Access•Mahua Sengupta, Bibha Karmakar•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2004•References: 2

The present paper focuses on the interethnic comparison among three endogamous groups (a higher caste, a tribe and a religious group) with different ethnohistorical background. A total of 700 individuals were studied from their anthropometric and dermatoglyphic traits along with their asymmetries. Statistical comparisons were carried out through the use of student’s ‘t’ test and Sanghvi’s T2 statistics. Heterogeneity for most of the anthropometri…
