Introduction. Spaces for global museology
When we issued the call for papers for this, our first-ever open issue of the biannual ICOFOM Study Series, we did not know what we would receive. It turns out that dedicated professionals and scholars from around the world answered our call, meaning we had hard decisions to make to choose the limited number of articles we could publish. If future open calls will elicit such a rich quantity of museological enquiry, then we look forward to issuing…
Introduction.
Introduction

Introduction
By naming "The Power of Museums" as the theme for its 26th General Conference in Prague (Czechia), the International Council of Museums (ICOM) gave its members, national committees, international committees and regional alliances the opportunity to develop themes highlighting the role of museums to counter the world’s major upheavals. After the intervening three years of pandemic and dissension, it was a rich and varied program signalling the res…

Rhetorical Museology
A rhetorical lens can bring a new dynamic and new insights to museological studies of our “multicultural platforms for negotiations” because the focus of rhetoric is on the close reading of how to persuasively operate collectively in the public sphere. In a world that grows increasingly polyphonic, museums are often the only public institution presenting the kind of discourse that aims to build a dialectical community across diverse groups. Thus,…
The Definition Debate
The ancient theory of stasis provides a framework to work through a complex debate such as we in ICOM face over the definition of the museum. Its methodology helps determine just where the impasses lie so they can be separately resolved. Its philosophy sees these impasses not as stopping points but resting points, necessary bends in the road that allow all parties to address their concerns and come to new consensus that can lead the debate in cre…
