  • The Architecture of Film Sound

Paul Newland•ARTICLE•Music, Sound, and the Moving Image•2023

In this article I examine the spatial relationship that develops between sound, architecture, and character identity in the films of Michelangelo Antonioni. Looking at specific examples drawn from The Passenger (1975), I argue that while Antonioni developed an interest in the dramatic possibilities of architectural structures (in particular, striking examples of modernist architecture), his films often also develop highly complex sonic evocations…

Rates of infertility are increasing in both genders (Sun et al, 2019). Aims: To explore the lived experience of patients with infertility to identify opportunities for improvements in care and education…

  • We Come, Our Country’s Rights to Save

    Paul Newland•ARTICLE•Visual Culture in Britain•2015

Throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, representations of rural landscapes in British cinema were most notably found in what became termed the heritage film genre (as exemplified by A Room with a View). These films have often been critiqued for their alleged conservatism (political but also aesthetic) and their ideological perniciousness. But Bill Douglas’s epic film about the Tolpuddle martyrs, Comrades (1986) – uniquely for 1980s British cine…

  • Look past the violence

    Paul Newland•ARTICLE•European Journal of American…•2009•References: 1

This article offers a study of the phenomenon of automotive destruction in American movies. It offers a critical reading of the spectacular pile-up sequence in The Blues Brothers 2000 (John Landis, 1998) which takes account of the development of screen car crashes from their earliest days in the silent Keystone, Laurel and Hardy shorts and Harold Lloyd features, through to their ubiquitous presence in contemporary Hollywood movies. Screen car cra…

  • The Cultural Construction of London’s East End

    Paul Newland•BOOK•Cultural Construction of London's…•2008

Paul Newland’s illuminating study explores the ways in which London’s East End has been constituted in a wide variety of texts – films, novels, poetry, television shows, newspapers and journals. Newland argues that an idea or image of the East End, which developed during the late nineteenth century, continues to function in the twenty-first century as an imaginative space in which continuing anxieties continue to be worked through concerning mate…
