Beyond the attention economy, towards an ecology of attending. A manifesto
We endorse policymakers’ efforts to address the negative consequences of the attention economy’s technology but add that these approaches are often limited in their criticism of the systemic context of human attention. Starting from Buddhist philosophy, we advocate a broader approach: an ‘ecology of attending’ that centers on conceptualizing, designing, and using attention (1) in an embedded way and (2) focused on the alleviating of suffering. There is a language in the landscape
The main idea for Jakob Meløe is that our concepts originate in what we do: a toddler's expressions come from the lifeworld and environment of a toddler, and a fisherman's concepts originate in the practice of fishing and a life of seafaring. The Philosophy of Environmental Emotions
A Phenomenology of Attention and the Unfamiliar
Nonhuman Images
Two films by Viera Čákanyová portray the momentous yet fragile landscapes of Antarctica. Frem (Slovakia 2019) depicts vast and arid vistas from the perspective of a drone whose movements are based on artificial intelligence algorithms. White on White (Slovakia 2020) was shot during the same expedition; this time the camera is held by Čákanyová. We see two quite different types of cinematography: one is a neutral, emotionally detached, machine-lik…
The Emotions of the Late Anthropocene in Visual Arts
This guest editors' introduction to the special issue provides a brief overview of ecological emotions, important philosophical accounts of emotion, the distinctive nature of visual arts and their interplay with affective experience, and the introductory summary of the special issue's articles
Ethical Attention and the Self in Iris Murdoch and Maurice Merleau-Ponty
As attention, in philosophy, is mainly discussed in the philosophy of mind, its ethical aspects have remained relatively unexplored. One notable exception is Iris Murdoch. Another philosopher, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, considers attention to be central for his phenomenology of perception, with important ethical implications. This paper explores the role of attention in ethics by drawing on both Murdoch and Merleau-Ponty and uses the resources they v…
