We encourage foundation donors, boards, and staff to honor this transparency in their own practices and to support others who do so
Geology of Tindfjallajökull volcano, Iceland
The geology of Tindfjallajökull volcano, southern Iceland, is presented as a 1:50,000 scale map. Field mapping was carried out with a focus on indicators of past environments. A broad stratocone of interbedded fragmental rocks and lavas was constructed during Tindfjallajökull’s early development. This stratocone has been dissected by glacial erosion and overlain by a variety of mafic to silicic volcanic landforms. Eruption of silicic magma, which…
P1-288 Patterns of social inequality among cases of meningococcal infection in Scotland from 2005 to 2008
Introduction Since the introduction of routine immunisation with the Meningococcal serogroup C vaccine (1999), the incidence of meningococcal infections, particularly Meningitis C infection, has steadily fallen in Scotland. However, despite the evident success of the vaccine there is still the issue that certain sub-groups of the Scottish population remain at disproportionate risk of acquiring the disease. We have explored the pattern of meningoc…
West Country Farms
As the authors of this handsome and innovative study point out in their introduction, in the past historians of vernacular architecture have been forced to let a fragment of the documentary record stand for the whole. There was no alternative to using the incomplete sample of buildings that had survived, many of them inevitably much altered over time, and almost inevitably skewed towards the more substantial and prosperous buildings of any given …

Pragmatic Counter-terrorism
Irreversible peace in Northern Ireland
Although it is a remarkable diplomatic achievement, the Good Friday Agreement could not have been reached without 'constructive ambiguity' about central issues concerning Northern Ireland's governance. Opinions on these issues - disarmament, police reform and the fundamental question of whether Northern Ireland stays British - remain as polarised as ever. Yet gains from the six-year peace process, the most significant of which is a wholesale redu…

The London “Crimp” Riots of 1794
Though in recent years there has been a growth of interest in the subject of riot and disorder in eighteenth century England, little attention has been paid to anti-recruiting riots. These were, however, one of the most common forms of riot and disturbance in some areas; and in this study of the London riots of 1794 I hope to illustrate some of their features, particularly in the London context

Side Stream Intakes for Hydro Power in Scotland
The enlargement of natural catchments by the diversion of streams from adjacent catchments into them has been important in many Scottish hydro-electric power developments. Exclusion of waterborn solids to a degree that depends on the function of the aqueduct being fed has been a major consideration. Reduction of air entrainment has been an associated problem. When trash is prevented from entering an aqueduct, the intake inevitably becomes a trap …
