Characteristics or Returns
Explanations for the persistent pay disparity between similarly qualified men and women vary between women's different and devalued work characteristics and specific processes that result in unequal wage returns to the same characteristics. This article investigates how the gender wage gap is affected by gender differences in detailed work activities among full-time, year-round, college-graduate workers in the US using decomposition analysis in t…
Do means-tested childcare subsidies discourage work
We examine how means-tested childcare subsidies affect parental labor supply. Using the introduction of reduced childcare prices for low-income families in Norway in 2015, we show that these subsidies may have the unintended effect of discouraging work rather than promoting employment. First, structural labor supply simulations suggest that a negative parental labor supply effect dominates, ex ante. Ex post, we find a small and insignificant effe…
The Equality Hurdle
This article revisits a central tenet of the welfare state paradox, also known as the inclusion-equality trade-off. Using large-scale survey data for 31 European countries and the United States, collected over a recent 15-year period, the article re-investigates the relationship between female labour force participation and gender segregation. Emphasising the transitional role played by the monetisation of domestic tasks, the study identifies a '…
The Hierarchy of Care Work
The devaluation of care work is regarded as a main explanation for the dominance of women in care work. However, less attention has been paid to how such devaluation affects not only the gender balance of jobs but also their ethnic and racial composition. This article examines patterns of gender and ethnic segregation and inequality within different types of care work. Using high-quality linked administrative register data covering the period 200…
Immigrants and the ‘caring father
How do parental leave rights and interacting societal structures influence immigrant fathers’ compliance with the ‘caring father’ model—typifying Nordic welfare states? Nordic parental leave schemes differ; this study investigated the impact of the Norwegian policy. Strong, stratifying effects related to access, particularly unfavourable for non-Western immigrant fathers, were demonstrated. These effects stemmed not only from the scheme being bas…
Dynamics of Claims Making and Gender Wage Gaps in the United States and Norway
This paper compares claims making and gender wage gaps in the United States and Norway, and asks how public sector employment moderates the association between gender segregation and the gender gap in wages in the two countries. Using nationally representative data and hierarchical linear modeling, we analyze gender wage gaps within and between job types. The analyses show that job types heavily concentrated in the public sector, effectively insu…
