  • Sexual orientation, entrepreneurship, and firm survival

Open Access•Mikaela Bäckman, Christopher S Carpenter et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2025

We provide new evidence on sexual orientation, entrepreneurship, and firm survival using Swedish population register data linked to business registry data from 1995 to 2020. Over this period, we study over 19,000 individuals who ever entered a legal same-sex union and compare their entrepreneurship and firm level outcomes with individuals exclusively in different-sex unions. We find that sexual minority men are 7.8% less likely than comparable he…

  • The Prevalence of LGBTQ+ Teachers in the United States

    Open Access•Laura Bellows, Chris Doss et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•2025•References: 5

Due to limited data, we know little about the prevalence of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) educators. Using the American Community Survey and Census Pulse, we examine the representation of LGBTQ+ individuals in PK–12 teaching. We find that 3.3% to 3.5% of LGBTQ+ individuals are teachers; in contrast, 4.4% to 4.9% of non-LGBTQ+ individuals are teachers. This new evidence highlights the need for data collection and research…

Donna Feir, Donn Feir et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2024•References: 7

Objectives. To examine the temporal trends in the transgender–cisgender mental health disparity in the United States. Methods. We used 2014–2021 US Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey data with logistic and ordinary least squares regression to document temporal trends in the transgender–cisgender disparity in self-reports of the number of poor mental health days in the past month and frequent mental distress. Results. In 2014, cisge…

  • Talking About Visualising Sustainability to Enrich Computing

Open Access•Samuel Mann, Ruth Myers•ARTICLE•ACM SIGCAS Computers and Society•2023

In this series we take a significant contribution to the visual representation of sustainability, and probe it for insights for computing. In a post-structuralist approach, we present this as a dialogue

  • MetaMAP

    Open Access•Ray Maher, Samuel Mann et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 11

This paper presents MetaMAP: a new graphical tool and framework for designing well-integrated sustainability initiatives, and managing synergies and trade-offs regarding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are highly interconnected, but many institutional structures and thinking paradigms lead us to look at them in isolation. This stifles innovation and social transformation. Most tools and frameworks, while valuable, focus on anal…

  • Sexual Orientation, Legal Partnerships and Wages in Britain

Open Access•Sarah Bridge, SARAH BRIDGES et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2019•Cited by: 12•References: 32

This article uses data from the Labour Force Survey to examine the effect sexual orientation has on wages in Britain. In doing so it provides the first empirical investigation of the effect being in a same-sex legal partnership has on wages. The results show that gay cohabitees and lesbians face a wage premium compared to their heterosexual counterparts. Decomposition results show that for gay cohabitees this arises due to differences in observab…

  • Integrating design thinking with sustainability science

    Open Access•Ray Maher, Melanie Maher et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 12

Design disciplines have a long history of creating well-integrated solutions to challenges which are complex, uncertain and contested by multiple stakeholders. Society faces similar challenges in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, so design methods hold much potential. While principles of good design are well established, there has been limited integration of design thinking with sustainability science. To advance this integration, w…

  • Benchmarking the environmental values and attitudes of students in New Zealand's post‐compulsory education

Kerry Shephard, Samuel Mann et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 2

How much do teachers in tertiary education know about the sustainability characteristics of their incoming students and, if this knowledge were to be available, how could their educational approaches be influenced by this knowledge? In New Zealand, Otago Polytechnic has committed itself to the goal that every graduate may think and act as a sustainable practitioner, and staff are changing their approach to teaching to achieve this. This research …
