The (In)Visibility of Diversity in Alternative Organizations
Reflecting current debates on ‘organizational virtues’ as going beyond the capitalocentrist bias of contemporary economies and to see diversity as ‘ethical responsibility,’ this article explores ‘ethical organizing’ at the intersection of alternative organizations and diversity. Our interest in a diversity-oriented analysis of alternative organizations stems from the assumption that those which question taken-for-granted notions of existing econo…
Inclusion done differently? Representations of inclusion and exclusion in the discourse of alternative organizations
This paper brings together two separate fields—inclusion and alternative organizations—to study the relational aspects of inclusion and exclusion both within and beyond organizations. By analyzing reports and websites of organizations committed to the network “Economy for the Common Good,” we empirically explore, first, how these organizations represent their “alternativeness” and how this relates to inclusion and exclusion; and second, we addres…
Unveiling affective disablism at work: A structural approach to microaggressions
Ableist microaggressions are ubiquitous experiences for workers with an impairment, chronic illness or neurodivergence in the daily execution of their job. These (un)intended everyday (non)verbal negative messages based on disability status affectively disable people, momentarily and with lasting effects on mental health and positive identity. Past research provided either psychological accounts, locating the origins of microaggression in the min…
Organizing solidarity in difference: Challenges, achievements, and emerging imaginaries
This special issue explores how solidarity in difference can be organized as a mutual relation that is based on participation on equal footing, fostering bonds of heterogeneity beyond conceptualizations of solidarity that depend on homogeneity. In this editorial and the five articles comprising this special issue, not only are the challenges to such an endeavor explored, but also the achievements in the present and emerging imaginaries of organiz…

Reconceptualising Solidarity in the Social Factory: Cultural Work between Economic Needs and Political Desires
This article reconceptualises work-based solidarity as political action that is distinct from, yet interlinked with, a socio-economic mode of activity. To extend existing relational approaches to work, this article reads a case study of a cultural initiative through Hannah Arendt's notions of labour, work and (political) action. With the latter being a form of engagement marked by plurality - the co-presence of equality and difference - the analy…
Diversity management discourse meets queer theory
Purpose The paper's aim is to examine how diversity management discourse reproduces heteronormative essentialist notions of identity in organisations. Design/methodology/approach This is a critical analysis of diversity management discourse that draws upon concepts, frames and the language of queer theory and insights from social identity construction to offer an alternative approach to reconceptualising diversity management. The key question of …
